Jason Momoa has been cast as Lobo in the DC Universe, with the character’s first appearance set to occur in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The actor joins an accomplished Supergirl cast led by Milly Alcock, who is rumored to debut in James Gunn’s Superman. Momoa’s star power, which has only grown in the years since he first rose to prominence on Game of Thrones, is one of the most exciting prospects of the upcoming cosmic film, especially after reflecting on one of his wildest and best roles.

Jason Momoa has actually had a long career in Hollywood, beginning in 1999 when he played a role on Baywatch: Hawaii. From there, the actor broke out as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones before becoming a leading man in Hollywood. He has also starred in the underseen television series See and played the DCEU’s version of Aquaman, both in his own films and in Justice League. His dream role, however, has always been his upcoming part in DC’s Supergirl.

Jason Momoa Is Returning To The DC Universe As Lobo In 2026

The Actor Was Long Rumored To Be Taking On A New DC Role After Playing Aquaman

Supergirl will be the next DCU movie after Superman, and Jason Momoa is confirmed to appear as Lobo in the film, a role he has wanted for some time. The film is set to see a cosmic story, and Lobo’s inclusion makes sense, even if he did not appear in the comic that the story was based on. Lobo is an intergalactic bounty hunter, and his look and personality align perfectly with the raw style and charisma that Jason Momoa has brought to so many of his roles over the years.

It is important, following an excellent run as Aquaman, that Momoa’s new character feel distinct and unique. This will be easy to do with the alien bounty hunter Lobo, who has been a popular DC comics character through the years. With Czarnian powers to rival Superman’s own, and an extensive history that sees the character interacting in many different places in the DC comics universe, there will surely be much more of Lobo ahead in the DCU even beyond this one film.

Momoa’s Fast X Performance Is The Best Preparation For His Lobo Role

The Actor Played Dante Reyes In The Fast & Furious Sequel

One of Momoa’s most memorable roles in recent years was in the recent sequel Fast X. In the film, he plays a villain with a dark past that is linked with events that took place in Fast Five. However, what is most memorable, is the over-the-top, flamboyant performance that Momoa gives in the role. He chews on every scene, bringing casually violent passion and humor to some of the darkest moments in the Fast franchise yet. While some critics did not enjoy Fast X as much as the rest of the series, Momoa’s performance received almost universal acclaim.

With unusual style, colorful action, and unpredictable, unhinged violence, Momoa’s role as Dante in Fast X is the perfect preparation for his new DC role. Lobo too must be a unique character in the DCU, with an unusual and fluctuating moral compass. If Momoa is able to provide a performance that taps into his skills here, and aligns his humor and charm with a disturbingly violent kind of madness, Lobo could wind up as one of the most memorable characters in the DCU.

Lobo Is Even Better For Momoa Than Aquaman

The Actor Is Perfectly Suited For The Czarnian Character

While bringing Jason Momoa in to play Aquaman in the DCEU was an inspired choice, subverting audience expectations of the Atlantean king in a similar way to the New 52 DC Comics, Lobo makes so much more sense. The character is in many ways DC’s version of Wolverine, and has the potential to create a uniquely cosmic character in the DCU. Lobo even already looks like Jason Momoa. A fresh bit of makeup could quickly transform the actor into the character.

Most importantly, Lobo allows Momoa to channel his own fandom. The alien is his dream DC role, and before he was told he was cast as Aquaman in the DCEU (after auditioning to play Batman), he actually believed Lobo was the role he was set for:

While Momoa was a great Aquaman, he was practically born to play Lobo. The character could be a major part of several upcoming DC movies, and is surely intended to recur beyond just this film. Still, including Momoa in Supergirl will likely be a big help to the film’s success, with Momoa’s star being especially well known. Whether as a friend or antagonist to Supergirl, Lobo’s scenes in the upcoming film are some of the most highly anticipated in the entire universe.

I Can’t Believe I Never Realized How Challenging Making The DCEU’s First $1B Movie Really Was Until 1 DC Star’s 2024 Comments

One of Aquaman’s major stars recently opened up about how difficult it was to make the film and now I have a newfound appreciation for the movie.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to be the second film in the new DCU, and there are all kinds of pressures that go along with that. While Superman‘s success will see how much audiences are interested in a new iteration of that hero, Supergirl will be an equally important test of how far that interest extends to ancillary DC characters. Including Jason Momoa as Lobo is a great start for driving audience interest in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with the film quickly becoming one of the most anticipated of 2026.
