The Justice League is one of the greatest teams in comic books. They fight for truth and justice and defend the Earth from cosmic and terrestrial threats. The Justice League’s range is almost limitless, with various branches, iterations, and multiversal counterparts. The Justice League’s members are among the most powerful in their universe or any other, and many have achieved reality-altering potential.
Diana became the Goddess of Truth, J’onn inhabited whole planets, and Hal Jordan was Parallax and then the Spectre, to name a few. Fights between paragons of justice usually come when the writers and artists behind a series decide to explore conflicting philosophies and moralities. Other times, fights between allies serve the simpler purpose of testing each hero’s power.
10 The Justice League Is The Original Seven
10 Justice League Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere
Death (and resurrection) is commonplace in comic books, but some Justice League deaths seem to come out of nowhere and greatly impact the reader.
The Seven are flawed versions of the Justice League The Justice League would beat them easily and without grotesque violence
Vaught Industries carefully hand-picked their world’s primary super team from a broad selection of genetically altered super people. Homelander is undeniably the most powerful member of The Seven, but anyone who thinks these twisted reflections could seriously harm the Justice League should take time to re-evaluate.
Homelander is strong, but Superman tows planets through space in his spare time. The Deep is a parody of Aquaman with none of his regal prowess, Noir is saner than many Batman villains, and Martian Manhunter would easily turn Jack From Jupiter’s mind on itself. Wonder Woman would likely allow Maeve to live up to her mythical marketing, and Maeve would probably take it, turning the tide and ending the fight.
9 The Guardians Simply Aren’t As Powerful
The Guardians are direct parodies of the Justice League If it came to blows, each Leaguer could easily overpower their counterparts
Invincible’s primary super team genuinely comes close to the iconic reputation of the Justice League. Led by the actual Abe Lincoln, who is much more than just the guy on the penny, the team is a good-natured parody of the League but wouldn’t stand a chance against the originals.
The Immortal is far more than just the guy on the penny, but Omni-Man is a closer Superman parallel and his single-handed victory doesn’t bode well for the team. Considering Nolan handily defeated the guardians by himself, it stands to reason the full force of the Justice League would end any conflict swiftly and likely more peacefully than Invincible or his teammates are accustomed.
8 The Defenders Are Barely A Team
Lack of coordination is the Defenders’ downfall The Justice League would only need to focus on certain members
Marvel’s greatest team that isn’t a team, the Defenders, unsurprisingly struggle with coordination. Hulk tends to disregard suggestions from the visibly overworked Stephen Strange, and the Silver Surfer is generally friendly but isn’t known for his people skills. The Justice League, if coordinated properly, could make short work of them.
Martian Manhunter or Green Lantern would have to get to the Surfer quickly and try to talk him out of the fight. The rest of the team would put up a good fight, but the League would ultimately prevail if they could keep their wits and carefully plan their moves. It’s easier to beat a team when the members don’t want to be there.
7 Teen Titans Have Much To Learn
The Teen Titans are still in training Not only would they win, but the Justice League would make it a teachable moment
The Teen Titans represent the next generation of superheroism, and they’ve faced the Justice League several times. The animated film Justice League vs. Teen Titans sees Superman and his pals possessed by the demon Trigon, forcing the Teen Titans to battle their elders and mentors for the fate of the world.
The only way the Titans genuinely defeat the Justice League is if the League is not in control of their bodies. Cyborg’s graduation from the Titans to the League and Robin’s growth into the mostly solo Nightwing are clear reminders that the Titans are heroes in training. They’d put up a fight and probably have a good talk afterward, but ultimately, the teens lose to real professionals.
The Suicide Squad’s interpersonal relationships are too messy for teamwork They’ve trained to kill the Justice League, but they’ve never permanently succeeded
Amanda Waller created Task Force X as a contingency plan for if the Justice League ever turned evil. DC’s latest video game puts that plan into action against mind-controlled leaguers, but the Suicide Squad only stands a chance when the heroes aren’t themselves and fight one-on-one. They have plenty of combat training, but that’s not enough to contend with the League.
The Suicide Squad shuffles their lineup with relative frequency, so some members are incredibly powerful. Even against an all-star roster with heavy hitters like El Diablo, Reverse Flash, or evil supermen, the Justice League easily takes the victory, as the Suicide Squad’s biggest weakness is the league’s greatest strength: teamwork.
5 The Thunderbolts Aren’t Strong Enough
10 Best Justice League Eras
As the Justice League makes its triumphant return after Absolute Power, it’s a great time to look back at what worked across the team’s iconic eras.
Vengeance typically isn’t as powerful as goodness in comics Most Thunderbolts are B-Listers getting a second chance
Marvel’s Thunderbolts are a lot like the Suicide Squad. The team consists of villains and anti-heroes with grey morality, sent on missions at the behest of the United States government. Comic incarnations are much stronger than the MCU’s, but even with Ghost Rider, Venom, Deadpool, and Red Hulk, they’d lose hard to the Justice League.
Most Thunderbolts have combat training, but they’re also mostly loose cannons. Teamwork is hard for morally ambiguous lone wolves to grasp, and the Justice League’s coordination would be the fight’s deciding factor even if they weren’t far more powerful.
4 The Justice Society Keeps Retiring
The Justice Society taught the League a lot of their tricks The JSA is undoubtedly getting too old to keep up with their younger counterparts
The Justice Society is DC’s original super team, and some incarnations are incredibly powerful. They are the original exemplars of what it means to be a superhero and some mentored Justice League members, but the League has a more impressive track record. Also, as much as they continue to prove that age doesn’t have to stand in the way of accomplishment, the Justice Society is notoriously getting too old for their superheroic ways.
Magic would be a real problem for Superman and Zatanna’s loyalties would be tested, but if the Justice League Dark were allowed to help, it might level the playing field a little. The Spectre and Dr. Fate pose serious threats, but the League’s sense of justice could hopefully prevail and leave Wildcat, Doctor Midnight, Hourman, and the rest to retreat and recoup. Starman could likely be talked into leaving, depending on which version.
3 The Fantastic Four Are Outnumbered
Seven versus four isn’t necessarily a fair fight The Four’s powers are fantastic together, but the Justice League has them covered
Marvel’s first family is much more than meets the eye. Imbued with cosmic power and representing earth, wind, fire, and water, there’s almost nothing they can’t do when they work together. That doesn’t mean they’d beat the Justice League. For starters, four versus seven doesn’t sound like a fair fight, and that’s if the League only brought their main roster.
Thing’s strength is borderline limitless, but so is Wonder Woman’s, and she’s also technically made of stone. Sue Storm is mighty, but whether she’s a match for a fully-powered Green Lantern remains to be seen. The human torch would cause problems for most versions of Martian Manhunter and Reed is smarter than Batman, but with any degree of prep time, the League could probably end the fight pretty quickly.
2 They’ve Defeated Avengers Before
Kurt Busiek and George Pérez’s JLA/Avengers pit the teams against each other The Avengers are usually underdogs; the Justice League are more versatile
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have faced off against the Justice League before, and the jury is still out on who definitively won. The Flash is acknowledged by Marvel as the fastest man alive, and Wonder Woman and Superman were worthy of Mjölnir. The Avengers would win if Tony Stark found Kryptonite or if the League were the bad guys. Otherwise, it seems like the Justice League is just more powerful.
Pretty much any lineup of the main Justice League would beat the snot out of the Avengers. Auxiliary branches of the Justice League would also wipe the floor with auxiliary branches of the Avengers. There are gods in the Justice League Dark to give the Dark Avengers a run for their money, and the Justice League International could take on the West Coast Avengers any day of the week.
1 The X-Men Are The Toughest Competition
What Marvel Could Learn from DC’s Best Justice League Comics
Marvel Comics could learn a lot from the Justice League’s team-specific villains, youthful allies, superstar rosters, and various offshoots.
The X-Men have the best chance against the Justice League Plot armor, prep time, and specific versions of heroes are the determining factors
The X-Men symbolize how, by being good to each other and ourselves, we can achieve our truest potential and affect real change. They’d challenge the Justice League, but DC’s greatest heroes can always level the playing field.
The League and the X-Men have numerous arcs that blur the lines between right and wrong, and both teams are full of members who’ve achieved ludicrous power levels. Even if every X-Man recruit ever showed up at once, ignoring deaths, arguments, and worse, the League would presumably be allowed to call in their recruits.
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths
With the Anti-Monitor set to destroy the Multiverse, the Justice League — and its many versions — must face him.
