While Superman‘s latest trailer has put all the attention on the Man of Steel, his cousin will follow suit with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is set for release nearly a year later. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) and star Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) as Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. While many might have assumed Gunn would have spaced Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow out from Superman, it seems like Kryptonians will be leading the charge of the DCU on film.
Yet Gunn didn’t plan for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to be the second DCU film. Speaking with The Omelet (via translation from CBR), Gunn revealed that it was screenwriter Ana Nogueira’s script that convinced him to move forward with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow over other films like Swamp Thing, The Authority, or The Brave and the Bold, which are still in development. Gunn also spoke highly of Craig Gillespie, and the pieces falling into place made Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow the best movie to follow Superman. Gunn said:
“I didn’t necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second movie we were going to make, but Ana [Nogueira] wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director, and we’re going to do this movie after Superman because he was the best option.”
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is adapted from the 2021 to 2022 miniseries of the same name by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely, which sees Supergirl in an intergalactic True Grit-type story where she is hired by a young alien girl named Ruthye to find the man who killed her father. Eve Ridley will play Ruthye, while Matthias Schoenaerts will play the villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills. The movie is set to begin production at the start of the new year in January 2025 in the United Kingdom.

The 1984 ‘Supergirl’ Movie Nearly Killed the Superman Franchise
1984’s ‘Supergirl’ gave female-driven superhero movies a bad reputation and heralded the end of Christopher Reeve’s ‘Superman’ film series.
James Gunn’s sentiments around Supergirl, and thereveal that he didn’t plan on making a Clayface movie until Mike Flanagan pitched him, shows that the DC Universe and its slate of projects are far more malleable than the MCU. DC can more easily add new titles and move others around, whereas the MCU slate being moved around can often cause a domino effect. While this might suggest that the various DC Studios films might not have the same interconnected feeling as the MCU, they also have the potential to stand on their own more and, if they are good, can provide solid foundations to build more out of.

Everything We Know About ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ may not come until 2026, but details about James Gunn’s next chapter in Gods and Monsters have emerged.
There is a small detail that has many wondering if Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will truly be the next DC Studios film. Warner Bros. has an untitled DC movie set for release on May 29, 2026, just a month before Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow flies into theaters. No films are currently being made, so this might have been a placeholder date unless Gunn reveals a surprise mystery film that he was able to keep under wraps.
Even without the mystery movie, 2026 will be a big year for DC. Following Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be Clayface on September 11th, while the separate continuity The Batman – Part II will open in theaters on October 2, 2026. Following Creature Commandos and the debut of the Superman trailer, the DCU is certainly off to a good start.
