Warning: contains spoilers for Black Canary: Best of the Best #1!
DC Comics is finally giving some forgotten Justice League stars some much-needed love. As the DC Universe’s premiere superhero team, the Justice League has had many different incarnations, as well as a host of spin-off groups. One of these spin-off teams was the Justice League Task Force. Appearing for a brief period, the Task Force finally gets a shout-out in Black Canary: Best of the Best #1.
Black Canary: Best of the Best writer Tom King is currently in the midst of an epic run on Wonder Woman.
Black Canary: Best of the Best #1 is written by Tom King and drawn by Ryan Sook. Seemingly, the entire galaxy is preparing for Black Canary’s mixed-MMA match with Lady Shiva. The two plan to fight to determine the best combatant on Earth. The ring announcer hypes Shiva first before moving onto Black Canary. The announcer lists each woman’s accomplishments and honors, and they mention Black Canary’s time with the Justice League–including the Justice League Task Force.

Like Any Long-Running Franchise, the Justice League Has Had Its Ups and Downs

The Justice League is one of DC’s flagship franchises, and like any long-running pop culture property, has ebbed and flowed. By the early 1990s, DC was regularly publishing two Justice League titles: Justice League America and Justice League Europe, as well as a Justice League Quarterly book. These books, particularly Justice League America, were acclaimed by both fans and critics, who praised the title for bucking the trend of “grim and gritty” comics. Top talent, including JM DeMatteis, Kevin Maguire and Keith Giffen worked on the books as well.

Why A New Justice League Recruit Promises To Be The Team’s Biggest Threat Since… Forever
The Justice League has only just reassembled and the expanded team is already facing a brand-new threat that promises to destroy the team.
When Giffen, Maguire and DeMatteis wrapped their run-up, the Justice League franchise floundered, and attempts were made to breathe new life into it. For the first time since Crisis on Infinite Earths, Superman joined the League. While this was an exciting shakeup to the status quo, it still failed to ignite sales, and Superman’s first stint with the League ended with his death at the hands of Doomsday. Similarly, the Justice League fell into disarray, and the franchise would not fully recover for years. Yet during this arguably low point in the League’s history, a new team emerged.
The Justice League Task Force, Explained
The Justice League Task Force Was Vastly Different From Its Predecessors
Justice League Task Force, debuting in 1993, was unlike other League teams that came before it. Outside of team leader Martian Manhunter, the Task Force did not have a stable membership, instead pulling in recruits as needed for each mission. Among the many who answered the call of the Justice League Task Force included stalwarts such as Aquaman, the Flash and Green Arrow, as well as surprise choices, such as Triumph, Peter Cannon Thunderbolt and the Tasmanian Devil. As noted in Black Canary: Best of the Best #1, the titular heroine joined as well.
While the Justice League Task Force was swept aside as a result, it still remains an important part of the lore, ranking alongside the Satellite or Detroit eras of the team.
Justice League Task Force wrapped up its run in 1996, just as DC was preparing for an epic relaunch of the Justice League under the guidance of Grant Morrison and Howard Porter. While the Justice League Task Force was swept aside as a result, it still remains an important part of the lore, ranking alongside the Satellite or Detroit eras of the team. At a time when the franchise had lost some of its luster, Justice League Task Force pressed onward, providing fans with a new vision of the team.
Will the Justice League Task Force Ever Return?
The Task Force Remains an Important Part of Justice League History
And now, the Task Force gets a shout-out over 30 years after its creation. The ring announcer mentioned the Task Force alongside the many other great teams Black Canary has been a member of, which is a clear sign of respect. Nostalgia for the comics of the 1990s is en vogue right now, and while this shout out to the Justice League Task Force may be nothing more than that, it still shows the team was a vital part of not only Black Canary’s history, but the League’s as well.
