Warning! Spoilers for Batman #156!One of the core aspects of Batman’s character is his refusal to take a life. It doesn’t matter how vicious or how evil someone is, Batman pretty much never stoops to lethal force. But DC has recently pitted Batman against the one enemy that he has a history of breaking his one rule for: KGBeast.
Recently, Batman has nearly lost his company to the Riddler, and he’s dealing with a mysterious half-brother who wants half of his Wayne Enterprises shares. On top of that, James Gordon was just framed for murder, the GCPD turned against him due to Vandal Savage being made the new commissioner, and the Court of Owls is afoot. Meanwhile, a mysterious hero known as Commander Star is stoking the flames against vigilantes.
While Batman was distracted by everything else, he couldn’t fully put his brilliant mind to discovering the identity of Commander Star. But as the Court of Owls is revealed to be working for Russia, Batman realizes that Commander Star could only ever be one person in Batman #156 by Chip Zdarsky and Tony S. Daniel. Commander Star is really the villain that Batman has nearly killed twice already: KGBeast.
Batman Is Set Up for a Rematch with KGBeast, a Villain He Might Actually Kill
Batman #156 by Chip Zdarsky, Tony S. Daniel, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles
Of the many villains that Batman has gone up against, he has avoided killing all of them. But he has come very close to using lethal force against KGBeast. During their first encounter, KGBeast attempted to assassinate the President of the United States. Batman then chased KGBeast down into the sewers. Instead of facing him in a one-on-one fight, Batman simply bricked up the exit, sealing him inside. The story presents this tactic as Batman condemning KGBeast to starve to death. A later retcon changed the story so that Batman tells the police where to find him.

With the DCU set to introduce a new Batman into the universe, there are some villains that deserve the spotlight in upcoming projects.
Batman has nearly killed KGBeast on at least one other occasion. After KGBeast shot Dick Grayson in the head, Batman hunted him down. Batman then has another confrontation with KGBeast, but this one ends much more brutally. Instead of fighting KGBeast, Batman fires his grapple gun at him, breaking KGBeast’s neck from the force of the blow. Batman then abandons KGBeast with a broken neck – in the woods in the middle of winter. It was later revealed that Batman was aware that he was being monitored by the government, meaning that he left KGBeast for them to find, but it was still a surprising use of force.
Batman Has Consistently Come Close to Murdering KGBeast
And Now He Has More Reason Than Ever
KGBeast was responsible for shooting Nightwing in the head, making him lose his memory for over a year. Now he’s responsible for turning Batman’s city against him, whipping up the public into a frenzy over destroying the rich and tearing down society. KGBeast is also backed by the GCPD, making him significantly more dangerous and powerful than ever before. There’s no doubt that Batman and KGBeast are going to have a major confrontation. The only question is which one of them will be walking away alive.
