The following contains major spoilers for Batman #156, on sale now from DC Comics.
One of Batman’s most dangerous foes is officially Gotham City’s newest hit vigilante.
After escaping from a Gotham City Police Department that has been weaponized against him, the titular hero of Batman #156 finds himself racing to catch up with the Riddler, all while staving off attacks from a bevy of other threats. More importantly, Batman spends this time picking over the pieces of the mystery at hand in his mind. Apart from figuring out that the Riddler was behind the murder of Gotham City’s Mayor Christopher Nakano, the Dark Knight has finally figured out the true identity of the city’s newest vigilante, Commander Star, better known as the KGBeast.

Anatoli Knyazev, aka the KGBeast, made his comic book debut in the pages of 1988’s Batman #417 by Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo. A former government assassin turned cybernetically enhanced mercenary, Anatoli quickly established himself as a formidable foe, not to mention one of the world’s top fighters. Over the years, the KGBeast has been at the center of numerous storylines, and has even been given is own successor in the form of the more obscure and less capable Gregor Dosynski, aka NKVDemon.
In more recent years, KGBeast has made a habit of going after Batman’s various proteges, namely Nightwing. During the events of 2023’s Nightwing #100 (by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Scott McDaniel, Rick Leonardi, Eddy Barrows, Javier Fernandez, and Mikel Janín), the serial killer known as Heartless set loose the deadliest villains the city of Bludhaven’s high-security prison had to offer. Among these was KGBeast, who wasted no time looking for a showdown with Dick Grayson. Unfortunately for him, Nightwing didn’t have any trouble putting KGBeast down for the count on that particular occasion.

The heartbreaking truth of one of DC’s most powerful heroes has officially been spelled out in the most simple terms possible.
KGBeast’s new persona as Commander Star was introduced only a few months ago in the pages of Batman #153, which kicked off the ongoing “The Dying City” storyline. This marked just one of several major shifts to the status quo in Gotham City, including the Riddler’s apparent move towards legitimate businesses rather than convoluted criminal schemes. The issue also saw Gotham City Mayor Christopher Nakano gunned down in cold blood by an unseen assailant who has since been revealed as none other than Jim Gordon, albeit under the control of the Riddler via the Mad Hatter’s mind-control technology.
