Matt Reeves teases the creative journey of The Batman 2 while also discussing the DC villain rumors for Robert Pattinson’s upcoming superhero movie. With the world actively waiting to learn more about The Batman 2’s villain and story, rumors have been floating around about who the Dark Knight’s next opponent will be. As The Batman 2 script is still being worked on, Reeves is finally offering some clues to what will be set up in his second DC installment.
In a new interview with Josh Horowitz, Matt Reeves was asked about the direction of The Batman 2 movie, following the official announcement that the sequel has been delayed to October 2027. While addressing the idea that The Batman 2 will show “different sides” of Pattinson’s leading hero, Reeves also reacted to rumors about who will be the next antagonist in the sequel, as he shared the following:
I hope so. I think so, I think the story is a continuation in a certain way, and completely different in another. And it’s going to show different sides of [Robert Pattinson]. I think it’s going to be really exciting, it’s going to be really cool. [When asked about rumors] You kind of look at them casually and go ‘Oh is that what they think now? Oh. Interesting. Okay.’ You gotta put your head down and do what you do and try to do it as best as you can.
After The Batman ending – which teases the hero starting to operate differently in Gotham City – it makes sense that Reeves has teased that The Batman 2 will explore different sides of Bruce. Following what he went through with The Riddler and likely learning about what Oz Cobb has been up to throughout The Penguin TV show, Batman is going to have to step up more in general. Given that this is a younger Batman who is still far from being the legend that he is known to the DC Comics audience, there is a more natural point of growth to explore in The Batman 2.
Looking at Reeves’ commentary about The Batman 2 villain rumors, it seems that the antagonist of the film may not be an obvious choice for who will be used from Batman’s rogue’s gallery. While many have been theorizing that Pattinson will face Mister Freeze as part of Bruce’s story in The Batman 2, Reeves could easily be going a different route and pick someone far more surprising. It’s also key to remember that, since Reeves’ universe being heavily grounded in reality, he may be looking at some of Batman’s grittier foes.
After Reeves’ latest The Batman 2 comments, it will definitely be exciting to see who the main villain of the sequel actually is. Casting is likely going to take place sometime in the early spring if they are truly aiming for a summer filming start. Once new actors begin to join The Batman 2 cast, hopefully more light may be shed on what villains are joining Reeves’ DC franchise.
