James Gunn’s comments about the DC Universe‘s Batman only make me more hopeful for a costume that has only been seen once in live-action. As the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters gets underway, hints and teases at wider elements of the franchise have been unveiled. Perhaps the biggest tease yet came as an Easter egg in Creature Commandos episode 6, with the DCU’s version of Batman making a silhouetted cameo appearance as his previous clashes with Doctor Phosphorous were outlined.
This cameo comes ahead of the DCU’s planned Brave and the Bold movie, which is expected to be the first solo adventure for the franchise’s new iteration of Batman. Overall, I was excited by the cameo in Creature Commandos, both for the way it fleshed out the DCU as a functioning universe and how it left Batman’s visual style mysterious. James Gunn’s recent comments about the DCU Batman raised my excitement even more so and also made me more optimistic than ever that an underutilized live-action costume will be used for the franchise.
Gunn Was Not Ready To Commit To Intricate DCU Batman Details
After the ending of Creature Commandos episode 6, James Gunn began talking at length about the DCU’s Batman after the character’s debut. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes TV, Gunn was asked about introducing Batman to the franchise and detailed how the process went. Interestingly, Gunn makes several comments that prove the vagueness of Batman’s appearance was entirely intentional, before going on to outline his love for the character of Batman and how he cannot wait for upcoming DC movies to explore the character further.
In this interview, Gunn explains how the initial animated reels of Creature Commandos episode 6 showed Batman in a lot more detail. However, the head of DC Studios says that he told the creators of the show to pull back, insisting that he was not ready to commit to several visual elements of the character’s design. Gunn insisted that he eventually told the animators to keep Batman’s Creature Commandos appearance as silhouetted as possible, meaning no minute aspects of the character’s suit could be discerned by the audience.
A New Version Of Batman Could Be Here
From my admittedly biased perspective, I am hoping that Gunn’s comments lead the DCU’s Batman to have a blue and gray costume. I have wanted to see a gray Batman suit with a blue cowl and cape in live-action for years, with only 2023’s The Flash providing a semblance of that costume. Even then, the blue and gray color palette for Ben Affleck’s Batman was not leaned into completely, making my desire to see a full version of this suit in live-action all the greater. Thanks to Gunn’s comments, I am more hopeful than ever that the DCU’s Batman could fulfill my wishes.

The reason my hope for this has only increased is thanks to Gunn’s comments on the intentional vagueness of Creature Commandos‘ Batman cameo. For years, Batman has been presented in most major franchises with his black and gray color scheme. If the DCU was going to commit to this also for its iteration of Batman, this would not be a shock and Creature Commandos could simply showcase the character in such a costume. However, the fact that Gunn admitted he was not ready to commit to various elements has me excited that a different visual style for Batman will be implemented.
Why The Blue & Gray Batman Suit Would Be Perfect For The DCU
A Different Style For The DCU’s Batman Would Have Several Benefits
Aside from Gunn’s comments, there are several other reasons as to why I think the DCU would be the perfect place to finally implement a blue and gray Batman suit. For one, the DCU is shaping up to present a more fantastical version of Batman than most live-action franchises of the past have depicted, which the blue and gray suit typifies perfectly. After all, Creature Commandos has already set up the universe to be full of monsters, sorceresses, and other fantastical elements, while the first trailer for Superman included comic-booky elements like Krypto and giant kaiju.
As such, I am hoping these otherworldly elements translate to the DCU’s Batman stories. After Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Snyder’s version of Batman in the DCEU, and Robert Pattinson’s version in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, there have been enough grounded, gritty, realistic Batman takes. Seeing a more fantasy-versed Batman world would be incredibly exciting for the DCU, and I feel as though the blue and gray suit conveys this tone more so than the typically dour black and gray costume.

Having two Batman franchises at the same time but in different universes could prove slightly confusing for general audiences, especially if they had similar visual styles. Presenting James Gunn’s Batman in such a distinct way would provide an easy method of separating the two franchises, all while allowing the DC Universe to utilize a look for the Caped Crusader that has barely been shown in live-action.
