The following contains major spoilers for Aquaman #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of the most important landmarks in the entire DC Universe is missing, and so is its champion.

After being called into action to quell an elemental threat, the titular hero of Aquaman #1 finds that his victory is far from worth celebrating. While he defeated a being of pure water, doing so gave the entirety of Atlantis time to disappear, leaving behind nothing but a gleaming, golden pearl. Worse still, Aquaman’s investigation into the mystery leads to the pearl’s own transformation into a mysterious portal, and as soon as the King of Atlantis has disappeared into it, all that is left behind is a towering testament to the undying glory of Darkseid.

While Aquaman himself has been a part of the DC Universe since the early 1940s, the undersea kingdom known as Atlantis first appeared years prior in Gardner Fox and Fred Guardineer’s closing story from 1939’s Action Comics #18, “Zatara: The Atlantis Mystery.” This story saw the heroic magician join an expedition to the bottom of the sea. While this journey eventually led to violent mutiny on the part of those in search of ancient treasures, the horrors of the deep ensured that the secrets of Atlantis would stay safe for years to come.

The ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid is one of if not the greatest villain that the DC Universe has ever known. Although he historically stands as an immortal alien despot, the character underwent a drastic transformation in the pages of 2024’s over-sized DC All In Special #1 by Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Daniel Sampere, Wes Craig, Mike Spicer, Alejandro Sánchez, Tamra Bonvillain, and Steve Wands. The issue saw Darkseid forcibly merge with the embodiment of the Wrath of God known as the Spectre before launching an all-out assault on the newly formed Justice League Unlimited.
