Best-selling comics of 2024 revealed.

GLAAD Media Awards nominees announced.

DC reveals Summer of Superman plans.

This is Comic Book Club News for January 23, 2025.

The best-selling comic books of 2024 have been revealed. And no surprise here, the Top 50 list is dominated by DC’s Absolute Universe, and Marvel’s Ultimate Universe.

Based on actual sales to comic book store customers versus sales from distributors to comic book stores, ICv2‘s list nonetheless agreed with DC Comics: Absolute Batman #1 was the best-selling comic book of 2024. Hot on its heels, in descending order, were Ultimate Spider-Man #1, Absolute Superman #1, Absolute Batman #2, and Absolute Wonder Woman #1.

Also hot in 2024 was Marvel’s rebooted X-Men line, with X-Men #1 coming in at number 6, and Uncanny X-Men #1 at number eight. In fact, when it comes to Marvel and DC, 30 of the Top 50 titles were Ultimate, Absolute or X-Men related, pointing to the overwhelming strength of those lines.

As for other publishers? G.I. Joe #1 from Skybound and Image came in at number 10, with fellow Energon Universe titles Cobra Commander and Transformers also charting. TMNT #1 from IDW came in at number 15, while the first issue of TMNT: The Last Ronin II also charted. And Dynamite had a lone entry with ThunderCats #1.

GLAAD has announced the nominees for this years’ 36th annual Media Awards, including comics from Marvel, DC, and more.

Presented yearly to, per the org’s website, “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and the issues that affect their lives,” this year’s nominations include favorites such as The Nice House by the Sea and Poison Ivy from DC Comics, NYX and Captain Marvel from Marvel, and BOOM! Studios I Heart Skull-Crusher, DSTLRY’s Spectregraph, and many more.

On the graphic novel list, titles include Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story from DC, Becoming Who We Are: Real Stories About Growing Up Trans from A Wave Blue World, and others.

In addition to the comic and graphic novel categories, GLAAD also honors everything from films and TV shows to podcasts. Marvel’s Agatha All Along was nominated for Outstanding New Series, while Heartstopper was nominated for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming or Film – Live Action, and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur was nominated in the animated category.

The winners will be announced on March 27.

Hot on the heels of the announcement that Dan Slott will be leaping small buildings in a single bound, aka heading from Marvel to DC to write Superman, DC Comics has pulled back the cape on their plans for the “Summer of Superman.” And that includes one-shot specials, graphic novels, and Superman Day at participating retailers.

It all kicks off with the Summer of Superman Special #1 on April 16, which brings together Slott, Mark Waid, Joshua Williamson and Jorge Jiménez for an over-sized 48-page special that tells, per PR provided to Comic Book Club, “a single story in three acts.” It all revolves around the wedding of Lana Lang and John Henry Irons, as friends — and enemies — coalesce around the event, and “spawn major new conflicts for the Superman family.”

But that’s not all! Superman Day will be held this year on April 18, aka the 1938 publication date for Action Comics #1. This year, participating booksellers, mass market, and online retailers will have All-Star Superman Deluxe Superman Day Edition hardcover, featuring a new dust jacket with art by Frank Quitely, and Superman Unchained Deluxe Superman Day Edition hardcover, with a new dust jacket featuring art by Jim Lee.

Then on April 23 is Superman #25, another oversized, 48-page issue written by Joshua Williamson with art by Dan Mora, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira. In the issue after the battles with Time Trapper and Doomsday… Lex Luthor is back, and ready to “fight for control of Supercorp and Metropolis.” Not only does it connect to the Summer of Superman Special, but it sets up a new storyline focusing on Lex.

The summer will continue with G. Willow Wilson and Gavin Guidry taking over Action Comics, an anthology collection Superman: The World, and much more to come.

For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And this Summer me and the family are vacationing at Superman, so this works out perfectly.
