Jon Kent, the former Superboy and the more junior Superman is getting a new name before the DCU kicks into high gear this summer. It’s been nearly four years since Jon adopted his father’s mantle, but with a new Superman film on the horizon, Jon is entering his next era with a more unique heroic identity.

Fans who have been paying close attention to Jon Kent in recent years know that after playing a big role in Absolute Power, he’s about to star in a new volume of Secret Six along with his boyfriend Jay Nakamura and Dreamer, as well as Catman, Deadshot and Black Alice.

While Secret Six has yet to officially debut, DC Comics has released solicitations for the first two issues. Interestingly enough, in the second issue’s description, it specifically notes every Secret Six team member’s code name. But rather than being described as Superman, Jon Kent is instead identified as ‘Super Son’.

Jon Kent Gets His Own Identity Once Again

Jon made major waves during the Rebirth era of DC Comics as Superboy. The young half-Kryptonian hero delighted fans and entertained readers in stories that really pumped new life into the Superman franchise. However, Jon’s time as the Boy of Steel came to an end when he was kidnapped by Ultraman and held prisoner on Earth-3 for years. By the time he returned, he was practically full-grown. Not too long after that, Jon’s father left to liberate Warworld and left Jon to safeguard the world, allowing the once Superboy to take on the Superman mantle for himself.

It comes as no surprise that Jon is going by Super Son since that was the subtitle of his one-shot comic during Absolute Power. And it makes sense that DC Comics would want to shift things so that Clark Kent is the only Superman in the DC Universe. After all, there’s about to be a new Superman film in theaters later this year and DC likely doesn’t want to risk confusion among new readers. But while some may bristle at the idea of Jon losing the Superman mantle, gaining a new identity is arguably the best thing for him.

Becoming Super Son is a Good Thing for Jon Kent

A New Identity Gives Jon a Chance to Be His Own Person

Anyone who’s been paying attention knows that Jon has been struggling since he was aged up. Aside from the trauma he’s incurred from Ultraman and Amanda Waller, Jon hasn’t really ‘fit’ anywhere since he came back from Earth-3. And truth be told, it was much too soon to rush him in and replace Clark as Earth’s Superman, especially as fans were still sore from being robbed of more adventures with Jon as Superboy.

But a new identity is a chance for a fresh start for Jon. He’s about to join a new team and dive into a darker part of the DC Universe. Sure, the film might be preventing him from being Superman, but Jon deserves the chance to take time and discover who he really is. He might not be able to go back to being Superboy, but as the Super Son, he’s got a chance to get some much-needed character development.
