The following contains major spoilers for Absolute Batman #5, on sale now from DC Comics.

DC’s Absolute Batman is about to meet the most Terrible Trio of all time.

Absolute Batman #5 opens to tensions running higher than ever, only for the truce between the Dark Knight and Black Mask’s Party Animals gang to come to an explosive and brutal end. By the time the dust has settled, Batman is beaten, battered, and on the verge of breaking down entirely. Worse still, Black Mask has offered the would-be villains a slice of the massive fortune he wields, and all they have to do is step up like the latest Terrible Trio already have.

The Terrible Trio are among the oldest villains that the DC Universe has to offer, with their original incarnation being introduced all the way back in 1958’s Detective Comics #253 in Dave Wood and Sheldon Moldoff’s story, “The Fox, the Shark, and the Vulture.” A band of costumed criminals who have modeled themselves after various animal motifs by way of ornate masks, the Terrible Trio make up for their lack of any overt powers by being among the most cunning villains to ever terrorize Gotham City. As such, the Terrible Trio are frequently at the heart of some truly astonishing crimes, even if they are still relatively obscure figures when compared to the rest of Batman’s rogues gallery.

The Roman Sionis of the Absolute Universe is the latest incarnation of Black Mask to make his mark on Gotham City. Although little is known about the Absolute version of the character, he is just as if not more murderous than his predecessors. While there are no signs that this Black Mask has the character’s classic, obsessive hatred for the Wayne family, he has more than proven himself to be a capable criminal mastermind, having orchestrated the Party Animals’ ongoing series of assaults on Gotham Ctiy, as well as the short-lived truce the gang shared with Batman himself.

Damian Wayne Is No Longer DC’s Robin

The Batman Family is about to lose one of its most important members, and it could be the next thing that completely breaks the Bat.

Like so many other characters to be reimagined for DC Comics’ Absolute Universe, the Bruce Wayne of this world is a far cry from the version fans are used to seeing under the cape and cowl. Rather than wielding near limitless resources, this Bruce Wayne is stuck operating from the shadows with whatever he can scrounge up for himself and whatever his allies are willing to lend him. Thanks to his kinships with the likes of Waylone Jones and Edward Nygma, the Absolute Batman has been able to call upon some exceptionally resourceful figures when he has needed help, including the artificially intelligent Absolute Riddler.
