Now fans are finally seeing the shocking event that ended up preventing these two from ever being an item.
In Summer of Superman Special #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Slot, Joshua Williamson, Jorge Jiménez, Belén Ortega, and Dan Mora, a young Clark is about to confess everything to Lana, from how he feels to his identity as Superboy. Unfortunately, his confession is interrupted by the time-displaced Validus.
While fighting, Superboy falls through the time-stream and sees glimpses of his future, including his wife, Lois Lane. Seeing the Future Changed Everything for Superman’s Love Life
Superboy Never Got the Chance to Tell Lana How He Felt
While Lois Lane is the love of Superman’s life, Superboy’s closest confidante was Lana Lang, his best friend and first love. The two were thick as thieves in Clark’s youth and while they seemed to be as close as two people could be, the timing never seemed to work out. Clark eventually moved to Metropolis and met Lois and later, Lana fell for John Henry Irons, aka Steel. Clark and Lana stayed close, of course, and have always supported one another as friends. But in another life, Superman and Lana could have been quite happy together.
What’s tragic is that Clark and Lana’s missed connection all comes down to Superboy seeing something from the future he shouldn’t have seen. Even though he couldn’t distinctly remember what he saw, he remembered enough to not pursue Lana romantically. But what if Clark didn’t see that image? Would he still have talked to Lana and told her everything? Would they still be together with a family of their own? It’s an incredibly frustrating revelation because, thanks to Validus’ interruption, fans will never know how Superman’s love life was actually supposed to be.
