Warning! Spoilers ahead for Detective Comics 2025 Annual #1!As if Batman didn’t already possess some of the most outrageous weapons in fiction, now he’s got a weapon that could literally destroy the universe. What begins as a perplexing mystery ends up with the World’s Greatest Detective stumbling upon something that could either change the world for the better or cause the end of everything.
In Detective Comics 2025 Annual #1’s story “Batman, Do Not Solve My Murder” by Al Ewing, Stefano Raffele, John McCrea, and Fico Ossio, Bruce tracks down a book related to a murder investigation. The book contains theoretical equations based on the observer effect that could easily be worked out by modern phones. Unfortunately, these equations could end the world if worked out.
Bruce manages to solve the case and bring the murderer to justice and brings the equations back to the Batcave to study them. Batman admits he knows he should destroy the equations, but also considers their practical applications.
Batman Has Equations That Could Change the World (Or End It Altogether)
The Dark Knight is Walking a Dangerous Line
In Batman’s line of work, stumbling across something that could potentially the world is just another Tuesday for Bruce Wayne. In his time as the Caped Crusader, Batman has taken on death-worshiping cults and secret societies dedicated to ushering in the end times. He’s also gone head-to-head against supervillains with enough power to completely end humanity (lest anyone forget about his infamous confrontation with Darkseid in Final Crisis). But as one of the DC Universe’s greatest heroes, Batman always comes through and finds a way to save the day, ensuring that, no matter what, the world keeps on turning.
Interestingly enough, these equations that Batman now possesses aren’t the first time Bruce has been responsible for something that could end the world. He created the Brother Eye system that was seized by Maxwell Lord, and he created Failsafe, an android who nearly helped bring down the superhero community in Absolute Power. To be fair, Batman is only considering how the equations could be used for good (like protecting the Earth from asteroids or nuclear bombs). But things like this always start with the best of intentions and, if Batman’s not careful, those equations could fall into the wrong hands.
Batman Needs to Destroy These Equations ASAP
Bruce Wayne Can’t Afford Someone Getting This Weapon
Yes, the Batcave is incredibly secure, but it’s not impossible to get into. Given Batman’s history of his greatest weapons falling into the wrong hands, he can’t afford the risk of anyone getting their hands on the equations he’s acquired. If there’s a non-zero chance that anyone else could ever get them, Bruce should just go ahead and burn the pages containing the equations and forget about any positive things they could do for the world. Maybe this weapon could make things better in some ways, but Batman has to know it’s not worth the risk.
