Superman writer-director James Gunn has confirmed the runtime for the DC Universe movie. After previously debunking a 122-minute runtime, Gunn has shared that the 129-minute runtime listed on AMC Theatres is correct.
While still a noticeable drop in length from the last solo movie featuring Superman, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (143 mins), Gunn’s upcoming blockbuster is no longer one of the shortest Superman movies ever made. The DCU movie has a longer runtime than six of its predecessors: Superman and the Mole Men (58 mins), Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (90 mins), Superman II: The Richer Donner Cut (116 mins), Supergirl (124 mins), Superman III (125 mins), and Superman II (127 mins). However, Gunn’s Superman was no match for the television cut of Superman: The Movie (an astounding 188 mins) and Superman Returns (154 mins), which remain the superhero’s longest solo movies.

The shorter runtime for Superman actually had some fans worried that Warner Bros. had forced Gunn to make the first DCU movie around the two-hour mark. Luckily, Gunn immediately put that rumor to bed, telling a fan on the social media platform Threads that there was “Zero truth to that. And they couldn’t even if that’s something that they wanted to. It’s a DC Studios film.” The last bit of Gunn’s reply seems to imply that Warner Bros. will not be allowed to meddle with DC’s movies, meaning that final cut privileges will stop with the directors and DC Studios.
With roughly two months to go until Superman hits theaters, a lot could change with the DCU movie’s box office tracking. However, as it stands at the time of writing, Superman is tracking towards a massive domestic opening weekend, with the latest numbers estimating a debut of between $154 million and $185 million. If Superman manages to push past that lower estimate, it has a good shot of breaking the record for the best opening ever for a movie based on a DC Comics character, beating Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s $166 million domestic debut.
A $150M+ opening is exactly what Superman needs, as the movie reportedly needs to gross at least $500 million worldwide before Warner Bros. sees any profit from the DCU movie, which came with a $225 million price tag. However, an insider states that Superman actually needs to earn $700 million worldwide to be considered a success at the studio and in the eyes of the public.
