Over 30 years ago, history was made when fans voted to kill the second Robin, Jason Todd. Now, DC continues the alternate story of what would have happened if he had lived… Jason Todd has escaped from the Dev Institute and is on the hunt for revenge—but when Robin finally finds the Joker, revenge transforms to tragedy…and madness! Meanwhile, Batman’s encounter with Mother Grimm and her army of lost children has the Dark Knight questioning both his past and his purpose: Is he Gotham’s savior or the city’s worst nightmare? Rescuing Jason is the only way to find the answer…and Nightwing is there to help him!
The damaged Robin is going to escape the institute he’s been admitted to and is determined to get revenge on the Clown Prince of Crime once and for all. However, the solicitation hints that Robin’s mission turns from revenge to “tragedy…and madness“.
Robin’s Looking for Revenge on Joker…But at What Cost?
A fan vote brought Jason Todd’s life to an unexpected end after he was beaten up and then locked in an exploding building by the Joker. However, an alternate issue was prepared in the event that the fans voted to have Robin survive the experience. Decades after the event, DC Comics finally released the issue as a ‘faux-simile’ edition and revealed what would have happened had the vote gone the other way. Instead of dying, Robin was taken to a hospital and slipped into a coma, while Batman was forced to reflect on the haunting experience.
Of course, Jason dying at the Joker’s hands is one of the most tragic moments in the entire DC history. However, he eventually comes back and ultimately winds up pretty well-adjusted after finding himself. One would think that Jason surviving in the first place would be the better alternative. But by the sound of this solicitation, it seems like it would have taken the Boy Wonder down a much darker road. While it’s unknown what’s actually going to happen when Jason confronts the Joker, don’t be surprised if Robin suffers a worse fate than “Death in the Family”.
What Could Be Worse Than Jason Todd Dying?
Jason’s death was one of the worst things to happen to a superhero, especially one so young. But one must remember how utterly depraved the Joker is. When he sees that Robin lived through the first awful experience, the villain is almost certainly going to try and outdo himself with some kind of unimaginable torture. And even if Jason manages to survive a second time, who knows if he’ll wind up walking away from this without some serious trauma? As bad as it is to say, Robin being killed by the Joker probably was the better fate for Jason Todd.
From the DC Vault: Death in the Family: Robin Lives! #3 is available on September 11th from DC Comics.
