Two huge Hollywood names are reportedly also in the mix for the Hal Jordan role in the upcoming DC Universe show Lanterns. While there will be multiple movies coming out of James Gunn’s DC Universe, DC Studios is also developing several TV shows that will connect the overall franchise. One of them is the highly-anticipated Lanterns series, set to explore two of the most famous Emerald Knights in the DC canon. The series does not yet have any kind of release window, but development on the HBO project has been steadily ramping up.

Nearly a day after it was revealed that Josh Brolin had reportedly been offered one of the lead roles in HBO’s Lanterns, The InSneider has revealed two more actors that DC Studios is allegedly eying for the role of Hal Jordan. Matthew McConaughey and Ewan McGregor would be next in line for Hal if Brolin passes. At the time of this story’s publication, Warner Bros. TV, HBO, and DC Studios have yet to comment on any of the casting reports for Lanterns.

James Gunn’s DCU Lanterns show will introduce two of the most well-known Green Lanterns, but it should also introduce other important DC characters.

Which Of The Three Reported Actors Would Be Fit To Play Hal Jordan?

According to HBO, Hal will be an established Green Lantern. The synopsis specifically describes him as a “Lantern legend,”meaning that he will be older than John Stewart, the show’s co-lead. That is why DC Studios has been looking at actors who are at least over 40 years old for the gig in Lanterns. With that in mind, it begs the question of which out of Brolin (57), McConaughey (54), and McGregor (53) would be more suitable to portray Hal in the Lanterns TV show.

HBO and DC Studios may benefit the most from hiring McGregor for the Hal role. Given Brolin’s massive history with the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thanos, it might be tough for the general audience to associate him with a role like Hal after his arc as the Avengers villain, which may also be why he could pass on the Lanterns cast offer. McGregor’s time as Black Mask in 2020’s Birds of Prey was also cut short.Lanterns would allow the Obi-Wan Kenobi actor the opportunity for an extensive run in the new DC Universe.

While it was a voice gig, Matthew McConaughey did make his MCU debut this summer in
Deadpool & Wolverine
as the voice of Cowboypool.

There is also the possibility that none of the three stars will end up being cast as Hal on Lanterns, as there could be other Hollywood stars in consideration for the HBO drama. Nevertheless, it is clear that HBO and DC Studios are trying to tap a huge name for Hal, given the current candidates that are reportedly in the mix. Hopefully, more news about who will play both Hal and John in Lanterns will arrive sooner rather than later.
