Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Vincent D’Onofrio reveals which DC superhero he would want to be cast as in James Gunn’s DC Universe. Following the conclusion of the DCEU movie timeline in 2023, DC Studios is starting a new franchise with Gunn’s DC Universe, which has several movies and TV shows in the works. While the DC Universe will start on the small screen this December with Creature Commandos on Max, “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” will properly begin with the Superman movie in 2025.

At this year’s DragonCon, D’Onofrio (via @Everything_DCU) chatted about his favorite comic book characters when he was growing up, revealing one of them was Swamp Thing. While still playing Kingpin in the MCU, D’Onofrio said that he would love to play Swamp Thing in the DC Universe, sharing the following:

These days, I don’t know why – I don’t if you guys are into DC like I am. Obviously, I like Marvel, too, because that’s my job. My comic books when I was a kid [were] Captain America, Spider-Man, Swamp Thing. Swamp Thing. I would really like to play Swamp Thing.

1 Upcoming DCU Movie Breaks A 35-Year DC Trend

The DCU is set to adapt some less well-known characters, and one hero that appears on the release slate will break a 35-year cinematic dry spell.

What Is Going On With DC Studios’ Swamp Thing Movie?

One of the many projects that was announced for “Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters,” in January 2023 was a new Swamp Thing movie. The announcement came nearly four years after the short-lived Swamp Thing live-action TV show premiered, with James Mangold set to direct and write the new iteration for the big screen. However, at the time when Gunn and Peter Safran revealed the initial slate, a release date for Swamp Thing was never announced.

However, there have been little to no updates on the Swamp Thing reboot by Mangold in nearly a year, begging the question if the film is still going forward. What is likely holding up the Swamp Thing movie is Mangold’s schedule, as he is also set to direct a new Star Wars film, which he was attached to before his DC Universe gig. Once Mangold has made his Star Wars film, Swamp Thing is more than likely going to be the next project he puts his full focus on.

Even though D’Onofrio is staying busy with Marvel Studios through Daredevil: Born Again, it wouldn’t be impossible to see him play Swamp Thing at the same time. Since Swamp Thing is a character who would be done through motion capture and practical effects, D’Onofrio could voice the role and/or physically play him, similar to how Derek Mears and Andy Bean shared the role on the Swamp Thing TV show, where the former played the titular lead with the latter portraying Alec Holland. Hopefully, more updates on Swamp Thing will emerge sooner rather than later, including where the film will land in the DC Universe release schedule.
