Ray – 8/10

Ray: Video game tie-ins are usually a mixed bag, especially for story-based games where the story has to tread around the main plot of the game. Multiversus is definitely not a story-based game – instead being a crazy fighting game where everyone from Superman to Garnet from Steven Universe to Bugs Bunny brawl in a format reminiscent of Super Smash Brothers. So a comic based on it is certainly an odd affair – but one with the potential to be completely wild. I kind of wish this first issue had been a little wilder, though, with most of the potential being kept for the cliffhanger. Instead, this first issue focuses almost entirely on the DC trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as they find their dreams haunted by mysterious sigils – ones that seem awfully familiar to us. As they battle their everyday villains and search for clues, it becomes clear that this isn’t a threat coming from their world.

Then the three meet, the same effect happens, and they find themselves in a strange place that seems like theirs, but not quite. They seek out a girl named Avia – who turns out to be the daughter of Mister Miracle and Big Barda, maybe the first we’ve seen of this character since her very famous birth in Mister Miracle’s self-titled maxiseries. Here, she’s a high-spirited preschooler who has gotten herself a very unusual friend – a five-foot talking rabbit with a taste for carrots and a disregard for the laws of physics. This is a great cliffhanger, but this first issue doesn’t have too many big moments beyond the cliffhanger. I am excited to see what Bryan Q. Miller will make of this concept, though – he’s written some of my favorite DC comics of all time, and it’s about time he got a new project with the company. I hope this comic gets as strange and ridiculous as it possibly can over the next few issues.
