Ever since director Todd Philips announced that Lady Gaga would star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to Joker (2019), major excitement has built among both DC and Gaga fans. Now, ahead of the film’s fast-approaching October release, Gaga has posted a new trailer across her socials to give fans a taste of what’s in store for her role as the Harley Quinn-inspired character Lee.
Across this new trailer, viewers get a better look at Lee, Gaga’s character. In contrast to Margot Robbie’s over-the-top performance as Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad franchise, this cinematic universe portrays Lee/Harley as an unsuspecting woman who gets swept away in the Joker’s antics, ultimately becoming his partner in crime.
When production began in 2022, it was teased that a musical element would be introduced to the sequel. It was then revealed at the recent Venice Film Festival that Gaga and Phoenix’s vocals were performed completely live on set, per her request. The academy-award-winning artist’s vocals can be heard throughout the new trailer, which features an epic rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life”.
The film marks Gaga’s third time acting in a major production, following her Oscar-nominated roles as Ally in Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born (2018) and Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci (2021). On the music side, the first single from of Gaga’s much-anticipated album by the codename “LG7” will arrive just days after the release of the movie.
Joker: Folie à Deux will begin screening exclusively in theaters on October 4, 2024. Tickets are available now via Fandango.
