Warning: Spoilers for DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #1!Just in time for DC Comics fans of screen and print alike, the Creature Commandos are returning to the world of DC Comics before they ever hit the screen. Slated as the first official project of James Gunn’s ambitious live-action DC Universe, Creature Commandos is an animated television show that will set up important threads for the larger world of films to follow. But it all starts here, in comics, and any fan who wants to get a head start on the action can do so with DC’s newest horror series.

From the terrifyingly wonderful mind of veteran horror actor and writer David Dastmalchian and artist Jesús Hervás comes a new series in DC’s horror imprint, DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #1. In the chaos of a grocery store, four new characters band together to unleash hell: a vampire, a werewolf, a gorgon, and an undead soldier, absolutely none of them human. The full preview of the first issue by Dastmalchian, Hervás, Alex Giumarães, and Ferran Delgado suggests that there’s even more chaos to come.

Some of the characters and monstrous archetypes on this new team roster are slated for the television show Creature Commandos – but there are also some new and exciting faces debuting in this first issue.

DC’s newest horror series is giving fans an appetizer before the Creature Commandos get their screentime. Although the cast of Creature Commandos is slated to be much larger than this comics team, with characters such as Eric Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein as well as some lesser known DC villains like Doctor Phosphorus and Circe, its comic cousin is pulling solely from classic monsters. Only four characters are needed in this new roster, and there are a few surprises among them, too, including some brand-new characters.

DC Comics is capitalizing on the popularity of horror books with a creepy new anthology and there’s several good reasons I’m looking forward to it.

This Creature Commandos roster includes a vampire, a gorgon, and a werewolf, who seems like a more traditional (and with-it) version of Weasel, who will appear in the television version. In addition, the Frankenstein’s monster archetype seems to be a recurring character in both mediums, though he goes by Lucky in this comic world. Most importantly, in this debut series, fans should expect a more intimate world with stranger characters than can be found onscreen, as is the magic of comics.

The next series tbe published as part of DC’s horror label, DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #1is not only preparing fans for the DCU but also filling out a line of genre stories that DC normally shies away from. Unlike its Black Label imprint, the DC Horror Present titles are typically set within DC’s main continuity, revealing the deepest and darkest corners of the DC Universe. DC Horror Presents is just the latest in the string of success for the comic book publisher, which is stretching the limit of what comics are capable of.

There is no one better suited for this new
Creature Commandos
comic title than David Dastmalchian, who helped turn around the ill-reputed fame of the DCEU with his role as Polka-Dot Man in James Gunn’s
Suicide Squad.

The wait is nearly over for James Gunn’s new and exciting DCU, which will hopefully bring new fans to the world of comics. There is a wide and rich history behind these movies, and DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos #1is just one issue in a sea of fantastical tales that can only be found in comics. For now, fans can get a taste of the eerie tales of gods and monsters to come in this spooky new Creature Commandos story.
