Friday at this year’s New York Comic Con, Jim Lee nostalgically recalled what he considered to be the “golden era” of DC Comics from 1985-1992. During that time DC put out a huge number of groundbreaking titles that pushed the edge of what a comic could be. That creative energy eventually formed into the Vertigo imprint, started by Karen Berger in 1993. Lee proudly stated that Vertigo showed the world that comics were “not just for kids” and could explore any number of genres and mature tones.

Sadly, Vertigo’s prominence began to decline by the 2010s, and in 2020 the label became defunct. DC had its Black Label imprint to “fill the void”, but there lacked a dividing line between the independent stories and the main superhero comics. According to Lee, this became extremely apparent to him when he finished reading an issue of The Nice House on the Lake and saw an ad for the DC multiverse in the back.

In order to fix this confusion, DC is bringing back its Vertigo imprint, beginning with James Tynion’s The Nice House by the Sea #4 on October 30 (Vertigo prints of issues #1-3 will be released for fans who want a consistent collection). The label will once again focus on standalone genre comics and creator-owned titles. The Nice House by the Sea will be its flagship series, but others will be coming out in 2025, including previously archived Vertigo titles.
