Superman and Lois Lane’s Dynamic Takes a Turn Now That She Has Superpowers

DC’s New Superwoman Flips Her Romance With Superman On Its Head

Superman and Lois Lane both made their DC Comics debut in 1938’s Action Comics #1 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and from that point on, their dynamic has remained roughly the same as it was back then. Superman flies around saving people, while Lois Lane is a reporter who he has to swoop in and rescue every so often. There’s a reason that imagery of Superman carrying Lois in flight is so widely beloved; it’s a staple of their love story, as he’s the superhero and she’s the civilian. In Wilkins’ variant cover art, however, Superman’s usual status quo with Lois has been switched.

Superman’s Iconic ‘Quick Change’ Gets Romantic Twist Thanks to New Superwoman

One of Superman’s most iconic poses just got better as DC legends Dan Mora and Joshua Williamson give it a romantic twist fans will love.

As displayed above, Wilkins’ art of Superman and Lois takes their classic trope and switches the roles they play. Lois Lane, wearing her new Superwoman costume, gets to be the brave superhero who flies in for the rescue. Meanwhile, Clark Kent is put in the position of a helpless civilian who needs to be carried. This endearing role swap does away with the “damsel in distress” trope that permeates many interpretations of Superman and Lois’ romance, letting her save him for a change. Thanks to her newfound Superwoman powers, Lois and Superman are equals in their relationship at long last.

As Superwoman, Lois Lane Can Finally Fight Beside Superman

Lois Lane Leaves Her “Damsel in Distress” Roots Behind

Typically, Superman has to fight on Lois’ behalf while she watches from the sidelines. That’s not to say she can’t challenge bad guys in her own way – Lois’ job at the Daily Planet has allowed her to take down criminals in the past – but when it comes to physical threats, she’s had to sit out. Now, though, Lois can suit up as Superwoman and fight by Superman’s side. In Superman #19 by Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora, Superman and Superwoman use their Kryptonian powers to combat crime in Metropolis together, giving them a refreshing new dynamic.

Now that she isn’t relegated to “damsel in distress” status, Lois Lane is finally the hero she’s always been on the inside, just like Superman.

The perfect comparison of Lois’ new role and her old one is demonstrated when Doomsday returns to DC lore. When Doomsday first killed Superman decades ago, all Lois could do was watch in horror, leading to the infamous image of her cradling his body in her arms. Today, due to the powers at her disposal, Lois doesn’t need to stand by anymore. Instead, as Doomsday appears, Lois fires up her heat vision and prepares for battle alongside Superman. Now that she isn’t relegated to “damsel in distress” status, Lois Lane is finally the hero she’s always deserved to be, just like Superman.

Superwoman Special #1 is available December 11th, 2024 from DC Comics.
