Warning: Spoilers for Birds of Prey #15The question of which member of the Bat-Family will inherit the Batman mantle is a highly contested one among DC fans, but Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl has long been the fan-favorite option. Her latest fight features her employing some of Batman’s tried-and-true tactics and shows how she’s followed in his footsteps as a fighter. One sentence spoken during this battle proves beyond any doubt that Batgirl deserves to be the next Batman.

In the preview for Birds of Prey #15 by Kelly Thompson, Sami Basri, Adriano Lucas, and Clayton Cowles, Cassandra Cain carries on her investigation of the Ninth Day cult. She’s gone deep undercover, trading her Batgirl costume for a new design as “Shen”, all to gain access to the cult’s inner workings. Things take a turn for the worse, however, when the cult gets suspicious of her and tries to kill her. Luckily, as a highly-trained martial artist, Batgirl is able to fight back.

Batgirl’s quick-thinking in the heat of battle lets her easily gain the upper hand, and one of the cult members’ lines showcases how threatening she is: “She’s even scarier when you can’t see her!” This sentence draws a fascinating parallel between Cassandra Cain and Batman’s fighting styles, thus solidifying her potential as a future Batman in DC lore.

Batgirl Channels Her Inner Batman by Using His Most Iconic Battle Tactic

Cassandra Cain Puts Batman’s Strategy to Better Use Than Him

During her fight with the Ninth Day cult members, Batgirl employs tactical maneuvers that are most commonly associated with Batman. As Batman, Bruce Wayne often stays hidden in the shadows until the moment he strikes in order to get the jump on unsuspecting foes. His dark, bat-like costume enables him to camouflage like this, hence why he operates at night rather than during the revealing light of day. Batgirl’s costume grants her a similar ability, and after working alongside Batman as a member of the Bat-Family, it looks like she’s picked up one of his handiest tricks and made it her own.

Batgirl’s mask has received a major futuristic upgrade that looks straight out of Batman Beyond—and we’re crossing our fingers to see more of it.

In her scuffle with the Ninth Day cult members, Batgirl uses her environment to her advantage like Batman would by hiding in the cloud of gas to evade detection. What makes Cassandra’s use of this strategy here arguably more impressive than Batman’s, though, is that she pulls it off without her costume. Her all-white outfit doesn’t make for easy camouflage, so she must improvise with the limited options at her disposal. She rips off a shirt sleeve to use as a mask and stays close to the ground, using kicks to sweep opponents. Her astounding ingenuity cements Batgirl as Batman’s most worthy successor.

Batgirl utilizing Batman’s signature strategy more effectively than him is one of many reasons she’s the ideal pick to be the Batman of DC’s next generation. Her martial arts proficiency is one of her most notable assets, with Batgirl being considered one of the best fighters in the DC Universe. Furthermore, Cassandra Cain’s loyalty to the Batman mantle and what it represents makes her suited to embodying it the way Bruce does. With these and other reasons in mind, Batgirl is irrefutably the best choice to take Batman‘s place in Gotham when the time comes for him to step down.
