After creating the best selling game of 2023 with Hogwarts Legacy, it looked as though WB Games was going to head into 2024 with all the momentum in the world. That momentum died with a screeching halt about 2 months into the new year when Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League released in February this year with the only lasting impact the game could muster up to this point is mockery at how bad and poorly handled it was. So, it looks like WB Games is refocusing their priorities, as reported by Geoff Keighley, it looks like the company is going to prioritize 4 IPs moving into 2025.
Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat are pretty much givens. As stated, Hogwarts Legacy was the best selling game of 2023, and while Mortal Kombat 1 has had its fair amount of criticism it still sold a very good amount, and the franchise still has room to develop goodwill from its playerbase if the next entry is in a decent enough state.
The real shockers here are DC, the comic book property hasn’t exactly had a smooth transition to the video game world lately, with the aforementioned Suicide Squad being a flop, and with Netherrealm Studios undoubtedly working on newer Mortal Kombat projects as WB themselves have said they won’t be able to lean on the Injustice brand either. There is the unnamed Wonder Woman game by Monolith Productions, but word has been quiet on that front for some time now.
A more positive note is Game of Thrones (or rather, A Song of Ice and Fire). Game of Thrones has occasionally dipped its toes into the video game world with Cyanide’s 2012 Game of Thrones game as well as Telltale Studios’ Game of Thrones episodic series, but neither of them made waves in the long run. With a declared intent to focus on the IP in the future, it might be an exciting time to be a dark fantasy fan looking for a video game to sate their urges, and George RR Martin himself is no stranger to writing for a video game as From Software’s Elden Ring can attest. On this front, at least, the future is looking hopeful for WB Games.
