Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: After a stint as the criminal boss of Gotham and a cosmic adventure, a new creative team has taken Selina back to basics – and sent her on the run, far away from her power base and those closest to her. As last issue began, she had barely survived a shooting and found that she had been framed for a series of murders – including one of her own alter egos. Whoever had done the deed knew more about her than anyone expected, including one of her tightest aliases, so she knew they could get to her anywhere. As this issue opens, she disappears into one of her many other alter egos, and heads abroad to seek help – but a series of assassins are tracking her using facial recognition and dispatching the deadliest killers in the world on her tail. Could this be Calculator or another established tech villain? Not sure, but it seems like the odds are against Selina before she even knows she’s being tracked.
Every writer seems to unravel another little corner of Selina’s past, which isn’t surprising given how many twists and turns it took over the years. This time, Gronbekk is bringing in a figure from her time at a girls’ home – the mysterious Suzie Sinner, a young woman under an assumed name who was sort of Selina’s little sister when they were housed together. Suzie still doesn’t trust Selina, who is under her Evie disguise, and it’s clear there are some rough feelings about Selina leaving, but they’re able to get some key information to each other before the chase begins anew. The last few pages have the feeling of a great spy thriller, with Selina diving off rooftops and going on the run once again. This series shifts genres quite a bit between creative teams, which I suppose fits a character who’s a master of disguise with an escape hatch around every corner in every city.
