After two long years of waiting for good news, December will be an exceptionally exciting month for DC fans. DC has been put under significant strain in recent years as its answer to the MCU, the DCEU, struggled to keep pace with its rival cinematic franchise. While that’s not to say the DCEU was not replete with big wins, including excellent casting decisions and incredible action sequences, several losses with critical and financial underperformers culminated in the franchise death knell that was Black Adam, after which it was announced that the DCEU would be coming to an end.
Fortunately, around this time two years ago, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the newly appointed Co-CEOs of DC Studios, announced the DC Universe reboot. While the exciting announcement was bittersweet following the revelation that Henry Cavill and his Justice League colleagues would not be reprising their roles, it spelled a new dawn for DC movies with the dependable James Gunn at the helm. After a year’s reprieve since the last DCEU movie, this exciting new direction will finally start to be unveiled next month.
James Gunn’s Superman Movie Trailer Releases
Reports Suggest That The Trailer Will Land Sometime In December
Superman is the first live-action movie to kick off the new DCU and is slated for release on July 11. This will be one year after filming wrapped, suggesting that Gunn and his DC colleagues are keen for the DCU’s flagship movie to be as polished as possible. Since Superman was announced in early 2023 as Superman: Legacy, fans have been drip-fed images and information with which to piece together what to expect from the latest iteration of Superman with David Corenswet in the cape. Yet December will reportedly give DC fans a closer look than ever.
Every Upcoming DC Movie In 2024 And Beyond
Here’s every new DC movie confirmed as in development by WB for 2024 and onwards, including release dates and where they belong in the franchise.
According to a report by Collider, the first trailer for James Gunn’s Superman is expected around mid-December. This should start the hype train rolling as it comprises the first official look at the new direction being taken by the DCU. While set photos of Superman have been a cause for concern among some, the trailer will be the first time that prospective viewers can get to grips with the movie’s aesthetic and plot – sparking several months of excitement and further speculation in the lead-up to its release.
The DC Universe Officially Launches With Creature Commandos
Creature Commandos Is Part Of Official DCU Canon
Creature Commandos is due to be released on December 5 as the first official release within the DCU. It follows yet another team of super-powered criminals under the purview of Amanda Waller, except this team comprises a host of non-human (according to Waller) misfits. The premise is familiar ground for Gunn, who directed The Suicide Squad, one of the DCEU’s most acclaimed installments, which is a promising sign of its quality.
While
Suicide Squad
and
The Suicide Squad
are ostensibly not DCU canon, James Gunn has revealed that certain cherry-picked events from DCEU installments will be canonized through references.
While Superman will be the first live-action movie of the DCU, Creature Commandos will launch the franchise in earnest. In an off-piste move by DC Studios, certain animations that do not fall under DC’s Elseworlds banner will be a part of the DCU’s mainline continuity. This means that Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. and Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will be portraying exactly the same character in both animated and live-action offerings from the DCU. Anyone truly invested in the future of this reboot should probably consider catching Creature Commandos.
