The following contains major spoilers for Action Comics #1079, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of DC’s greatest underrated heroes has just proven that she can single-handedly take on Superman – and every other Kryptonian.

Action Comics #1079 finds the world under siege from an army of Kryptonians, all of whom were recently serving life sentences in the recesses of the Phantom Zone. While heroes all across the globe are doing everything they can to put a stop to the threat, one in particular wastes no time stripping her foes of their formidable powers. Specifically, it is Doctor Light who is able to stave off multiple Kryptonians with almost no effort, and all thanks to her ability to call upon the rays of a red sun any time she wants.

DC’s Silent Knight Just Cut Down One of Publisher’s Most Powerful Characters

DC’s latest holiday horror has just dealt a devastating blow to one of the most powerful supernatural superheroes of all time.

The mantle of Doctor Light has a long and storied history in the world of DC Comics, with the original Doctor Light, Jacob Findlay, both lived and died solely in the pages of 1989’s Secret Origins #37 in Craig Boldman and Ty Templeton’s closing story, “Doctor Light: All Those Light Years Ago!” When Jacob set out to harness the powers of light to become a superhero, he ended up losing his life in a random accident caused by his already scorned coworker, Arthur Smith. With Jacob’s death, Arthur assumed the mantle of Doctor Light, albeit as a villain rather than the hero Findlay had hoped to be for himself.

DC’s other Doctor Light, Kimiyo Hoshi, first appeared in the pages of 1985’s Crisis on Infinite Earths #4 by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. Originally an astronomer in Japan, Kimiyo was imbued with the powers of the Vega star thanks to an errant beam of energy sent by the Monitor, who had sent it in the hopes of creating a champion to stand against the Anti-Monitor. In the years that followed, Kimiyo played a key role in multiple storylines, usually as a member of one of the several iterations of the Justice League who counted her among their ranks.
