The first issue of Absolute Batman established a new version of Gotham City. Yet it is still protected by a Dark Knight, albeit a drastically different one than the original. The opening pages of the second issue continue in this trend, revealing more of the origins of this Bruce Wayne. It also confirms the brilliance of this Batman, despite his lack of financial resources.
Written by Scott Snyder, with art by Nick Dragotta, Absolute Batman #2 shows more of how the death of Thomas Wayne effected his son. It also shows the Dark Knight of this world, as he battles the forces of Black Mask. However, while he is outnumbered, he is not outclassed, and his chemistry skills help him turn the tide of battle.

Much like the first issue, the story is narrated by Alfred Pennyworth. However, those expecting to hear the thoughts of Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler will be stunned. This Alfred Pennyworth is a soldier of fortune, sent by his employers to investigate the mysterious millionaire Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask. This brings him into conflict with the Dark Knight. However, Pennyworth soon finds himself respecting the young vigilante for what he has accomplished.
To that end, Absolute Batman #2 finds Pennyworth acting in such a way as to support Bruce Wayne. He does not do this directly, however, nor does he do it out of idealism. He does it because of the simple belief that the enemy of his enemy is his friend. At the very least, the Dark Knight’s purposes seem to align with his, and observing him in action also enables him to gather the intel that his employers require.
Absolute Batman #2 arrives in comic shops everywhere on November 13, 2024.
