The Injustice franchise has been built on the DC Comics roster, and a third entry has been a long time coming. NetherRealm Studios took its staple Mortal Kombat formula and applied it to a DC adaptation, offering two action-packed brawlers. A lot of fans have been hoping for a third Injustice, but NetherRealm has yet to grant the wishes of players.

Recently, hope was reignited about the possibility of Injustice 3 when it was revealed that James Gunn and Peter Safran have been in talks with both NetherRealm Studios and Rocksteady about future projects. Gunn and Safran have been put in charge of revamping the DC cinematic universe, so the duo’s discussions with these developers could hint at future connected games. An official Injustice 3 confirmation may still be a while away, but if that day ever comes, introducing Booster Gold to the game’s roster could be a compelling choice.

If Injustice 3 Isn’t Imminent, NetherRealm Should Jump on a Common Gaming Trend

Injustice 3 has yet to be confirmed, but if a third entry is still far away, NetherRealm already has a way to revamp the series.

DC’s Time-Traveling Showboat

While heroes like Batman and Superman have backstories that set the stage for more noble pursuits, Booster Gold is an amusing contrast. Born as Michael Carter in 25th-century Gotham City, he eventually uses time-travel powers to return to the present day. With his knowledge of past events, he uses this advantage to set up heroic exploits in order to gain publicity as a superhero. Bordering on a con artist at times, this makes him more three-dimensional. Therefore, Booster Gold’s time-traveling abilities could present NetherRealm with a fun opportunity to experiment with his powers in an Injustice game.

Booster Gold’s sidekick is a robot named Skeets that holds a deep well of historical knowledge.

NetherRealm Has Already Experimented With Time-Manipulation

Mortal Kombat 1 makes its timeline rewrite canon, using the reboot as a central part of the story.

The timeline shake-up brought forth by Liu Kang was an interesting way to start the franchise’s narrative over. Reworking Mortal Kombat‘s characters to have fresh backstories has been divisive, but it shows that NetherRealm is interested in experimenting with manipulating time.

Building a new storyline from scratch is one thing, but adding Booster Gold’s time-traveling powers into a fighting scenario is far more challenging. Since he has built his hero status on having knowledge of past events, it would make the prospect of fighting other characters difficult to pull off. However, a story thread that brings Injustice‘s heroes into Booster Gold’s 25th-century timeline could be a way around such an issue. It’s a fascinating concept to think about, and although tricky to pull off properly, it may be worth the risk, especially if Booster Gold is set to be part of Gunn and Safrans’ DC universe.

The DCU’s Mysterious Booster Gold Series

Booster Gold is set to get an official TV series, but there have yet to be any concrete details revealed about the project so far. Last year, reports circulated claiming that Kumail Nanjiani had been cast as the titular hero, but this has yet to be confirmed, so these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.

With a full-blown series planned for the future, Injustice 3 would have the perfect excuse to introduce Booster Gold to the franchise. There is a treasure trove of underrated DC characters that Injustice should embrace more, and Booster Gold would be a unique addition. Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie will be the ultimate test of this new DC universe, and if it proves successful, Injustice 3 going into development may be a real possibility.
