Warning! Contains Spoilers For Batman: The Brave and the Bold #18!
It seems like Batman is a truly unstoppable force of nature. That no matter what crime or issue he comes up against, he’ll always be able to solve it. This is why it’s so surprising that DC is confirming that Batman’s biggest weakness is something as simple as getting older.
The ultimate weakness of Bruce Wayne was exposed in Batman: The Brave and the Bold #18’s story “Doubt” by Christian Ward and Patric Reynolds. This story showcases a brand-new villain, known as Benjamin Blik, and the big thing that makes him dangerous is his ability to inspire doubt in anyone he comes across with just a few well-placed words.
Batman is a pretty stoic person, and it’s hard to imagine him giving into doubt, but when he’s affected by Benjamin’s powers, he instantly begins to stress over whether he should continue being Batman. But the surprising thing is why he’s stressing over it. It’s not his worry that he’s making a difference in Gotham or not, it’s that he’s simply getting too old.
Absolute Batman Fixes 1 Major Superhero Criticism (But Does This Make Bruce Wayne Corrupt?)
Bruce Wayne has completely obliterated a major superhero criticism, raising the question of whether it makes him corrupt or the best Batman yet.
Batman’s Aging Has Been A Recurring Plot Point
Batman: The Brave and the Bold “Doubt” by Christian Ward, Patric Reynolds, Luis NCT, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou
Considering Batman has dedicated his life to protecting Gotham City, there’s a lot that he could have doubts over. Whether he’s actually making a difference or if the life he has chosen is worthwhile are all things he’s expressed doubt about in the past. He also doubted whether his treatment and decision to bring the Robins into this life was the right one. With a supervillain who can inspire doubt with his powers, there are tons of different routes that they could have gone with this, but instead, they returned to one plot point that just keeps popping up for Batman.
Batman is someone who always seems to be there, but he is still just a man, and he’s getting older.
Batman has never really been in any danger from the villains or situations he ends up in. It’s almost always been his age. There are dozens of stories that cover this, including things like the first episode of Batman Beyond as well as The Dark Knight Returns. Both of these had plots that revolved around the idea of a Bruce Wayne who was getting too old to protect Gotham City, and the idea is being revisited in Detective Comics, where Batman will be tempted to use a serum to solve his age problem. Batman is someone who always seems to be there, but he is still just a man, and he’s getting older.
Bruce Will Eventually Be Too Old To Be Batman
Age Is The One Thing Batman Can’t Defeat
The reason characters like Superman and Wonder Woman are so incredibly powerful isn’t just because they can fly through the air or lift mountains with ease. It’s the fact they’ll never stop doing that. DC has recently revealed that Superman will be one of the last living beings in the universe, long after everyone else is gone. This is a luxury that Batman simply doesn’t have. After a few decades, his body will be spent, and he’ll either need to find a way to reverse his aging or give up the cowl. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that getting older is Batman’s biggest self-doubt.
