Fans who want to keep riding the high of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film will have the perfect book to keep the good times going. DC Comics is putting a lot of effort into the Summer of Superman initiative and the publisher wants fans to capitalize on the excitement in a brand-new ongoing series.
At this year’s Wonder Con, DC Comics gave fans a better look at what was on the horizon as the Summer of Superman draws closer. Per Popverse, writer Dan Slott spoke at the convention, hyping up his anticipated upcoming series, Superman Unlimited.
Slott really hyped his book up, saying it was perfect for fans fresh off of seeing Gunn’s Superman movie. He also made a lot of promises for the series, saying it would feature familiar characters like Krypto and unexpected villains. Slott also teased the dangers awaiting Superman but promised that while the hero will sweat, he won’t lose.

Every Superman fan alive is looking to this July when James Gunn’s Superman brings the new DCU to the silver screen. With so much hype going around, DC Comics is directing that energy towards its greatest icon and honoring him with a brand-new initiative, the Summer of Superman. Over the next several months, the publisher is putting out new ongoing series and miniseries starring Superman and his supporting cast, as well as taking currently published books in new directions. But few announcements have gotten fans’ attention as much as Dan Slott coming over to DC to write Superman Unlimited.
What information there is does seem to indicate that Superman and Superman Unlimited’s tones will be somewhat similar. Gunn’s movie is clearly going for a more high-energy, fantastical approach, filled with multiple colorful characters and exciting battles. Superman Unlimited is very similar in that regard, as Slott has also brought big ideas to his book, such as a swath of kryptonite landing on Earth and a resident of Gorilla City working for The Daily Planet. Having a book that matches the Superman movie’s vibe is a great way of perpetuating the energy of DC’s new initiative far beyond the summer.

Sure, the publisher isn’t lacking Superman-related books. But it makes good sense to have at least one on the stands that any fan, whether seasoned or brand-new, can grab if they’re looking for something to match the style or tone of Gunn’s film. While the Summer of Superman is a great idea, it’s solid stories that will keep that hype from Gunn’s movies alive well after the summer is over. Hopefully, Slott will make good on his promise and deliver the perfect story for Superman fans to read after watching James Gunn’s movie.
