I’m thrilled that the upcoming Superman reboot in the DC Universe seems to be about to break a disappointing romance trend in recent superhero projects, as James Gunn will spotlight the powerful relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane. For quite some time, I’ve noticed that superhero movies and TV shows have seriously been lacking good romantic relationships. Too many have major problems, flaws and red flags, and are doomed to fail, so I’m excited about the prospect of an honest-to-goodness love story being told in James Gunn’s new Superman reboot.
I love love, and I am a huge fan of seeing romantic relationships blossom in among the action and drama of a superhero franchise. We’ve seen some iconic romances from Marvel and DC Comics grace our screens over the years, but these relationships are seldom easy and actually enjoyable to watch. This makes me incredibly grateful for the new Superman trailer, as it seems as though Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s relationship will fill this void, delivering a proper romance that will be a huge benefit to the new DC Universe.
Superhero Movies Have Been Seriously Lacking In Romance For A While
Many Superhero Franchise Romances Are Doomed To Fail
For the most part, Marvel Studios has been relatively good at establishing romantic relationships in the MCU. However, I’ve noticed that these are seldom easy and strong romances. Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter took years to finally reunite, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts ended up happy before the former’s sacrifice, Peter Parker and MJ have had a tumultuous and tragic relationship, and many more have also ended in calamity. Most projects in the MCU feature a romantic storyline, but these seldom work out in the way I really want them to.

This was even more dire in the DC Extended Universe. Henry Cavill’s Superman and Lois Lane had a romance marred with death and darkness, Wonder Woman’s love for Steve Trevor was similar, Barry Allen never began his relationship with Iris West on-screen, and Aquaman and Mera had a noticeably absent relationship in the DCEU’s final movie, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. I’ve been sad to see romances played off as burdens and nuisances with dark backstories in recent superhero projects, and would love a love story with a bit more levity.
The Superman Trailer Features Plenty Of Lois And Clark’s Romance
Clark Kent & Lois Lane’s Romance Is One For The Ages
Thankfully, it seems that Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s romance in 2025’s Superman will give me exactly what I want. The first trailer for the Superman reboot put the love between David Corenswet’s Superman and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane front-and-center, showing them kissing several times, including once while flying, and seemingly preparing for battle together. The romance between Superman and Lois Lane is one of the most iconic and notable love stories in popular culture, so I’m very excited to see it come to life in the new DCU.
Most previous movies and TV shows featuring Superman have explored his romance with the human journalist Lois Lane, which began to gain prominence in DC Comics during the 1940s and ’50s. Most recently, we saw Lois Lane portrayed by Amy Adams in the DCEU and Elizabeth Tulloch in the Arrowverse and Superman & Lois. Following the release of Superman’s trailer, however, I’m incredibly excited to see this iconic romance brought into the vibrant and colorful new world created by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

James Gunn Has Experience Developing Great Love Stories
I think that James Gunn is the perfect filmmaker to become the guardian of the romance between Clark Kent’s Superman and Lois Lane. This is one of the most notable relationships in comic book history, so we need someone with experience developing strong love stories to manage it. Gunn fits the bill, most notably because of his pristine and heart-wrenching development of the romance between Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora in the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which grew gradually over several years and was far from rushed.
Superman and Lois Lane’s first kiss was seen all the way back in 1938’s Action Comics #5, which sees Superman save Lois and a small town from a flood, earning him a kiss from the reporter.
James Gunn has confirmed that Clark Kent and Lois Lane will already know each other and have been working together for some time when Superman begins. This means their romantic relationship may have already been established, though one moment in Superman’s trailer makes me think that we’ll see the start of their blossoming romance. I trust James Gunn to do this romance justice, spotlighting the love, passion and commitment of both Clark Kent and Lois Lane without rushing anything like Zack Snyder did in 2013’s Man of Steel.

Superheroes Are Humanized In These Live-Action Franchises, So Need Human Connections
Nowadays, practically every superhero in a live-action franchise is humanized by Hollywood, and this includes incomprehensibly powerful extraterrestrial beings such as Superman. This makes me think that featuring love stories in these superhero franchises is inescapable and a necessity, as there is no stronger human emotion than love. Romance is a huge part of the human experience, so if superhero movies want to humanize their most powerful heroes, giving them someone to love is the easiest and most relatable way to accomplish this.
