Two iconic DC heroes are going to war over the fate of the universe’s most important child.

On an otherwise ordinary day, Scott Free, better known as Mister Miracle, is enjoying the afternoon at home with his wife and daughter. At least, he is until the sudden appearance of Orion, who comes looking for a devastating favor. As revealed in the pages of The New Gods #1, Orion has been tasked with hunting down and ending the life of the latest New God, one only recently born on Earth. Knowing exactly how horrifying his mission is, Orion wants Scott to find the child first and hide them where they will never be found, even if it means spending the rest of both their lives running from one of the strongest forces in the entire universe.

The New Gods are widely considered some of industry legend Jack Kirby’s greatest creations. First glimpsed in the pages of 1970’s Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #134 by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta, the New Gods are an ancient, impossibly powerful race of beings who hail from the worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis. Though these are indeed planets unto themselves, the New Gods who call them home exist beyond ordinary understanding, with the likes of the Highfather and Darkseid standing as the pinnacle of what both worlds’ New Gods are capable of.

The cosmic antihero known as Orion made his debut in 1971’s New Gods #1 by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta, which saw him lead the charge to Apokolips in a bid to disrupt Darkseid’s hunt for the fabled Anti-Life Equation. This made the revelation that Orion was in fact the son of Darkseid all the more shocking, especially when the former is such a staunch defender of the innocent. In a tragic origin story, an infant Orion was at the center of a bid to bring peace between New Genesis and Apokolips by having the reining families of each exchange their newborn sons with one another.

A Cosmic DC Superhero Just Reclaimed Her Power from One of the Universe’s Strongest Entities

One of DC’s cosmic Entities has just been beaten for what might be the last time, and doing so finally set a powerful hero free from its obsession.

While Orion was raised under the benevolent skies of New Genesis, Scott Free, the son of Highfather, was raised on Apokolips under the murderous watch of Granny Goodness. Introduced just a month after Orion in Kirby and Colletta’s Mister Miracle #1, the titular hero managed to avoid becoming another of Apokolips’ many villains by embracing his astonishing survival instincts, which in turn became impossible abilities as an escape artist. Although Mister Miracle’s New God physiology gives him a host of superpowers, he has consistently leaned into his acquired skills in his endeavors as a hero.
