As many are aware, the United States has significantly increased tariffs on imported goods, a change that even DC Comics hasn’t escaped unscathed. Tariffs essentially raise the cost of products coming from other countries for both businesses and consumers. However, DC is taking steps to help lower prices.
DC Comics is ramping up its focus on young readers in July 2025, spotlighting a range of graphic novels for middle-grade, young adult, and early readers. However, the publisher is also mindful of the ongoing tariffs and how rising prices could negatively impact young audiences.
To support retailers, and in turn help keep prices lower for readers, DC is launching a special 10% backlist sale on 97 titles, including YA and middle-grade graphic novels, Webtoon, and manga series, available through Lunar Distribution, Universal Distribution, and Diamond UK until April 11.
DC Responds to US Tariffs With “Anti-Tariff” Initiative
Main Cover by Sara Kipin for Poison Ivy: Thorns TP (2021)
This backlist discount is being described as an “anti-tariff,” serving as a strategic price break amid rising costs. A full list of qualifying graphic novels can be found at the end of the article. Notable titles included in the backlist are the Teen Titans graphic novels by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo, several Teen Titans Go! books, and various volumes from the DC Super Hero Girls line. Recent releases such as Barda and This Land is Our Land: A Blue Beetle Story, the Primer middle-grade series, and titles from DC’s Webtoon and manga lines will also be part of the sale.
DC is further sweetening the deal for retailers: those who purchase 20 or more books from the backlist will receive a free Teen Titans/Teen Titans Go! double-sided header card for their DC Compact Comics display, or they can purchase the card separately for $35. In short, DC’s anti-tariff initiative is great news across the board. Retailers save money with lower per-book costs, resulting in better profit margins and reduced prices for consumers. Ultimately, this makes graphic novels more accessible to young readers, as stores will be more inclined to stock affordable books for kids and teens.

DC’s backlist discount is a smart and commendable move, especially as it supports their younger reader base with a generous 97 titles included in the promotion. By launching this initiative, DC is actively pushing back against the impact of rising tariffs, offering a practical solution that benefits both retailers and readers. This proactive approach naturally raises the question of whether Marvel will respond with a similar strategy, as they too are being affected by the increasing costs of imported goods. Even if Marvel takes a different approach, following DC’s lead could help ease the burden on consumers and retailers alike.
