Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (1989) was DC’s first Elseworlds title, written by Brian Augustyn and drawn by Mike Mignola. Thirty-five years later, the fan-favorite series returned with Andy Diggle’s Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age. Now, this ever-expanding Elseworlds saga is set to continue with yet another sequel that fans won’t want to miss: Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – A League for Justice.

Last year, DC’s Elseworlds imprint ushered in a new era with the release of Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age, continuing the iconic saga of the Victorian-era Batman. Now, the epic tale is set to continue on July 9, 2025, with the release of Andy Diggle and Leandro Fernández’s Gotham by Gaslight: A League for Justice #1.

This new series picks up directly where The Kryptonian Age left off, as fans witness the beginning of the Gilded Age Justice League, featuring Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, Cyborg, and Martian Manhunter. These heroes will come together in A League for Justice as they seek to unravel the mystery of alien artifacts from the Kryptonian Age.

Diggle’s Gotham by Gaslight: The Kryptonian Age is best described as an epic expansion of Augustyn and Mignola’s 1989 Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. Building on the Victorian-era Batman and worldbuilding brilliantly established by Augustyn and Mignola, Diggle broadened the scope of this Elseworlds tale by taking the story beyond Gotham and giving a Gilded Age makeover to other iconic DC characters. The Kryptonian Age introduced Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Cyborg, Flash, and Martian Manhunter, fleshing out their origin stories within the Victorian setting and setting the stage for their eventual convergence.

The Kryptonian Age ended with the characters all arriving in Smallville, Kansas, offering brief but significant interactions between them. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – A League for Justice is set to deliver the payoff of everything that The Kryptonian Age has built up, with the heroes finally coming together and likely forming their own League. Their mission will center on unraveling the mystery, and potential dangers, of the Kryptonian Age artifacts that were teased throughout the previous narrative. Fans are about to witness an epic reimagining of the Justice League, one that stands apart from all previous iterations thanks to its unique Elseworlds setting.

Those who have been following The Kryptonian Age series know that these heroes are still far from becoming the allies they are teased to become in A League for Justice. The ending of The Kryptonian Age is jam-packed with misunderstandings and miscommunications, leaving the various heroes believing they are on opposing sides, resulting in all-out brawls. For example, Green Lantern sends Batman crashing through a wall, while Wonder Woman and Martian Manhunter confront Superman, believing he is their enemy. Clearly, these heroes still have a long way to go before they debut as the Victorian-era version of the Justice League.
