An ancient and supernatural force stalks the streets of Gotham City—a werewolf so powerful it’ll defy Batman’s most trusted resources: his brilliant mind and extensive gadgetry. But are Batman’s physical strength and resilience alone enough to put the creature down for good, or will this fight strip him down to his very bones? Even powerful magical allies like Zatanna caution the Dark Knight that he may not walk away from this encounter unscathed.

As this massively powerful werewolf stalks Gotham City, not even Bruce Wayne’s magical allies have faith that Batman will come out on top, suggesting some fun DC cameos in the first issue and beyond. But the best part of this news is that each issue will feature a main cover by series artist Subic — and they’ll all glow in the dark. Check out DC’s preview pages for Batman: Full Moon #1 below.

DC’s Black Label imprint has become home to boundary-pushing and award-winning work from some of the comics industry’s top talent. Because Black Label books are outside traditional DC continuity — and often rated 17+ — the stories aren’t afraid to go big, go strange, and go scary. The last few Batman-starring Black Label series in particular have embraced high-concept horror themes, including the recent Batman: City of Madness by writer/artist Christian Ward. Batman: Full Moon joins a recent and expanding tradition of Batman horror comics from the imprint.

DC Black Label books aren’t all Batman- and horror-themed:
Zatanna: Bring Down the House
#1 by Mariko Tamaki and Javier Rodríguez is available now, and the noir-ish
Plastic Man No More!
by Christopher Cantwell and Alex Lins is available September 4th.

Batman, of course, isn’t a stranger to the supernatural, and even his oldest Golden Age stories have featured supernatural themes. In fact, as recently as the Titans: Beast World event by Tom Taylor, Ivan Reis, and Lucas Meter, Batman himself was turned into a wolf who promptly stalked the streets of Gotham. But turning into a wolf is very different from battling a true, classicly-rendered werewolf, and horror fans are in for a treat as Batman takes on a massively powerful supernatural beast in monthly installments starting this October.

Batman stories are often at their most interesting when Bruce Wayne is faced with threats beyond his ken — and those threats are often occult-ish, magic being one tool he just can’t seem to permanently place in his arsenal. With even his staunch ally Zatanna doubting his abilities, fans will have to pick up Batman: Full Moon #1 this fall to discover if Batman can actually take on a werewolf and survive the experience. There are countless exciting Batman face-offs in the 85-year history of the character, and Batman vs. Werewolf is almost certainly about to be counted among the best-of-the-best.

Batman: Full Moon #1 is available for pre-order July 19th and available for purchase October 9th from DC Comics.
