After a rough decade or so, DC‘s cinematic universe might finally be about to set things right. James Gunn and Peter Safran are now at the helm, the prior DC cinematic universe is completely finished, and the only thing that’s left to do is to move forward onto something brand new. The animated Creature Commandos series will be the first official part of the new DCU to be released, and from that point on, the floodgates will be swung wide open.
One of the first projects on the DCU’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” slate is HBO’s Lanterns, set to be the new DCU’s first live-action show. Ozark‘s Chris Mundy, Lost and The Leftovers‘ Damon Lindelof, and Mister Miracle writer Tom King are all attached to Lanterns, and though the show’s cast hasn’t been confirmed yet, one recent rumor has fueled a great deal of speculation. And these casting rumors could make Lanterns the ideal pick for the DCU’s first tie-in video game.

While the DCEU might have not been the best era for DC, a plethora of brilliant live-action and animated movies have shown iconic potential.
HBO’s Lanterns Casting Rumors Explained
When HBO’s Lanterns series was first picked up back in June, a very brief description of the show was released. According to the official description, Lanterns will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a “dark, Earth-based mystery.” In this new DCU, John Stewart will be taking on the role of a fresh Green Lantern Corps recruit while Hal Jordan will act as a mentor figure. Based on recent casting rumors, HBO is looking for an older actor to play Hal Jordan.
A few weeks ago, it was rumored that Josh Brolin (of Thanos and Cable fame) was offered the role of Hal Jordan for HBO’s Lanterns. While this rumor seems to have had some truth to it, it’s also been rumored that Brolin rejected the offer. But if this casting rumor is anything to go by, it seems like HBO is on the hunt for an actor who’s around the 50-year-old mark, and that eventual casting could pave the way for the DCU’s first canon video game.
Lanterns’ Casting Could Pave The Way for an Obvious DC Tie-In Video Game
Back when James Gunn first announced the DCU and its upcoming slate of animated and live-action projects, some fans took to Twitter to ask the co-chair of DC Studios if video games were planned to be part of the new universe’s canon. Gunn’s made a few comments over the last year regarding this topic, confirming several times that canon video games could be part of the DCU, though they wouldn’t be direct adaptations of the movie or show, but instead explore some of the surrounding material.
With Gunn’s comments and Lanterns‘ recent casting rumors in mind, it would make a lot of sense for the DCU’s first canon video game to be a prequel focused on Hal Jordan’s career as a superhero before the events of HBO’s Lanterns. Many fans have wanted a good Green Lantern video game for years now, and this hypothetical Lanterns prequel would be the perfect way to flesh out the new DCU while not treading on the toes of HBO’s upcoming series.
