Pokémon is home to a sprawling universe containing hundreds of unique creatures that roam the wilderness ripe for catching, with the fire-based dinosaur known as Charizard being one of the very first and most popular monsters in the entire franchise. In new fanart drawn by DC Comics alum Jim Lee, Charizard gets a realistic comic book-style makeover that gives the character an even more badass look than ever before!
Drawn during one of Jim Lee’s (@jimlee) recent Twitch streams, this industry vet got his start in the late ‘80s as an artist for Marvel and went on to draw the inaugural issue of X-Men in 1991. Co-founding Image Comics later in the ‘90s, Jim eventually found himself as an integral member of DC Comics, and the rest is history. Uploading character sketches of Star Wars’ Boba Fett, Dragon Ball’s Goku, and even the deep-cut animal sidekick of Comet the Super-Horse, Jim recently shared work-in-progress art from DC’s upcoming Hush sequel, hyping it up in a way only he can.
Charizard Gets a Comic Book Makeover by Artist Jim Lee in Incredible New Sketch
Fanart Design by Jim Lee (@jimlee)
Making his Pokémon anime debut in season 1’s “Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon,” Charizard was initially an antagonistic figure to Ash and Pikachu’s close-knit team after it evolved from a particularly angsty Charmeleon, forcing everyone involved to take a long hard look at themselves and mature accordingly. Eventually respecting one another to the point that Charizard finally stopped being disobedient toward Ash’s commands, it wasn’t until dozens of episodes later that Charizard struck out on his own to join his fellow flame dragons, ending a relationship that had come a long way since his days as an innocent Charmander.

Goku is a powerful fighter from Dragon Ball fame while Charizard is an incredibly formidable Pokemon, with this piece fanart finally uniting the two!
Sketched in pencil against a dark and cloudy background, Jim Lee takes this more realistic version of the character and brings out his dragon elements while finding a way to hone in on the terrifying nature of what a fire-spewing monster could look like in the real world. Detailing Charizard with roughly textured skin, a spiked tail, fanged snarl, scaled neck, horns, and a pair of battle-worn wings, the only thing left to do to this illustration would be to find a colorist to tint Charizard his signature shade of orange — something that would further enhance this already impressive design.

With interest in the franchise at an all-time high, Pokémon has recently begun a new era in the anime space following the journey of two brand-new protagonists, Liko and Roy, with Pokémon Horizons’ highly anticipated second season slated to stream on Netflix on February 7, 2025. Funny enough, this anime began with a completely different version of Charizard making his presence known, showing that love for this OG pocket monster is still abundant within the fan community, with Jim Lee’s incredible sketch of Pokémon’s fiery dinosaur showing that the character can work just as well in the world of comics.
