Actor Colin Farrell may soon be playing another DC Comics character after drawing high acclaim for his role in The Penguin. The possible casting would also help further test the actor’s range, as it’s a role that is far unlike the Batman villain.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell is in talks to star in Sgt. Rock, a World War II action movie in the works at DC Studios. Luca Guadagnino is on board to direct the Justin Kuritzkes-penned film, and there were recent reports that he’d be reuniting with Queer actor Daniel Craig as the star. However, Craig reportedly left the project, which was followed by rumors that The Bear star Jeremy Allen White had also turned down the role.

Cristin Milioti talks about her near-casting in the Wicked movie.
DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran teased back in February that the project would only move forward with production this summer as planned if they “find the perfect actor.” Farrell’s reported casting would put the project on track to make this planned production date. The film is expected to shoot at DC Studios’ production hub in England.
The Sgt. Rock character was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. He is depicted as a soldier during World War II who exhibits incredible strength in addition to having exceptional skills with firearms and hand-to-hand combat. Sgt. Rock first appeared in nprint in 1959, and there have been various attempts to get a movie made about the character over the years, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis previously eyed for the part in adaptations that didn’t end up getting greenlit.

The Penguin’s Breakout Star Was In 1 of HBO’s Most Disturbing Sci-Fi Shows (& They’re More Alike Than You Think)
Cristin Milioti is one of the breakout stars of HBO’s The Penguin, but the Batman actor had a similar role in another sci-fi series years earlier.
Farrell has had incredible success with portraying a DC character, so it’s no surprise to see him eyed to take on another big role. After making his debut as Oz Cobb in The Batman, Farrell reprised the role for HBO’s The Penguin last year. The show was highly revered in addition to drawing high viewership, earning Farrell some of the highest praise of his career. He won a slew of awards for his performance, including a Primetime Emmy Award.
The possible casting of Farrell as Rock wouldn’t mean that he’s finished playing Oz Cobb. He might appear in the upcoming sequel to The Batman, though it will be a wait to see that happen, given that that movie isn’t hitting theaters until 2027. While The Penguin was also developed as a limited series, the show’s immense success has led to conversations at HBO about possibly making a second season.
“If there’s a great idea [for Season 2], and the writing was really muscular and as strong or stronger on the page than it was the first season, of course I would do it,” Farrell said to THR about the possibility.
The Penguin is streaming on Max.
