Bloomberg offered a lot of insight on Warner Bros.‘s current video game situation today. It’s not very often that a company’s video game projects get so much outward publicity outside of official reveals, but apparently, there was quite a willingness to share some private information. The most important newsbreak is no doubt the revelation of a new Rocksteady Batman game, but other DC superhero-related games were also revealed. They both just so happened to be canceled superhero projects.

Batman gets a lot of love when it comes to video games, but some developers at Warner Bros. wanted to explore completely different parts of the DC Universe. The Flash and Constantine are two characters who were specifically named. Unfortunately, nothing will come of those desires as Warner Bros. has no current plans for either character.

So Much Potential With Constantine and The Flash

John Constantine is quite the polarizing figure, but that’s what makes him one of DC’s most interesting characters. Entrenched within the occult, Constantine could have offered a completely different kind of world and set of themes to explore. The theoretical Constantine game didn’t make it far, though, as it never ended up as more than a pitch on WB Games Montreal’s part. Clearly, someone feels strongly about that mishandling, considering that this has been made public.

After the Constantine pitch went nowhere, WB Games Montreal moved on to the Flash. While many fans of the hero have wondered how exactly the Flash’s super speed could be interpreted into a video game, apparently the Montreal studio had a working concept for that. The release of the 2023 Flash movie didn’t exactly inspire any confidence in the project, though. The video game is now no more.

James Gunn Finally Shares Update on The Flash’s DCU Future After Ezra Miller Controversy

James Gunn comments on the future of The Flash in the DCU following Ezra Miller’s run ending in controversy.

Warner Bros. could do so much with the DC Universe, but a lack of a clear focus has really been hurting them. Rather than broadening their horizons with characters like John Constantine or the Flash, Warner Bros. just seems to want to play things safe. A lack of proper direction has severely hurt the company, and no desire for innovation certainly doesn’t help.

The best fans can do is imagine what could have been. The Flash has long deserved one big solo game to call his home, but that doesn’t seem likely to happen for a long time now. Constantine would also have appreciated a spotlight in the mainstream media, but the team that pitched his project didn’t even actually want to work on it. DC really deserves better for its video games.
