GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – At the Coliseum of Comics you can find figurines, your favorite new comic book, and on Saturday only meet two DC icons.
With a table full of books and souvenirs, Karen Whitfield and Athena Finger stopped by the Coliseum of Comics to shake hands and sign autographs. But who are these two?
“I am the bronze-age bat girl.” said Whitfield.
“I am the heiress to the dark knight.” said Finger.
Finger is the granddaughter of Milton Finger, the writer and co-creator of Batman. She says she spent many years fighting for her grandfather to receive credit for his contributions to creating the superhero.
“Most of the time if you ask people whose their favorite superhero they’ll say Batman and a lot of them don’t know that there were really more than one person involved with it.” said Finger.
Now the duo is traveling from Gainesville to Kissimmee, ending in St. Augustine at Ancient City Con to continue spreading knowledge about the characters. Whitfield says she enjoys telling others about the adventures of being Batgirl.
“I want them to leave with a superhero in their heart. I want them to meet us and know that we were in that legacy and trailed a path.” said Whitfield.
Finger says it’s the fans that are most important to her because, without them, there’s no Batman.
“I take every opportunity to come out and meet the fans because without the fans we wouldn’t be celebrating 85 years of Batman this year and comics in general.” said Finger.
