The American MonsterVerse has seen its fair share of memorable showdowns in the last decade. Since Godzilla’s second attempt in the States was a major success on the big screen in 2014, this epic shared universe has blazed on with film sequels, TV shows, merchandise and a fun DC Comics crossover. Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong was a hit for both Legendary Comics and DC when it debuted in late 2023. So much so, the limited series is getting a sequel, Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 later this year. Now, just ahead of its summer release, fans are getting their first monstrous preview of the upcoming comic rematch.
Courtesy of Comicbook.com, the follow-up will continue where the first story left off with Task Force X, aka “The Suicide Squad”, their own Titan hybrids that director Amanda Waller intends to use in future monster-centric attacks. The Justice League are understandably skeptical and plan on putting a stop to Waller’s latest project. They set their sights on “Legendary Earth”, the home of Godzilla and Kong, for help. This is all the while, the Legion of Doom has “unlocked a portal to another dimension” to make matters much worse for our favorite DC Heroes. The sequel once again comes from writer Brian Buccellato, artist Christian Duce and colorist Luis Guerrero.
The main cover for Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2 will be done by Duce, but there will also be variant covers by Dan Mora, Alan Quan, Gabriel Hardman, John Giant, Kevin Maguire and Carlos D’Anda. These stylish pieces see the Suicide Squad trying to outlast Godzilla’s atomic breath, Godzilla staring down Superman and Green Lantern showing off the might of his Power Ring as Godzilla and Ghidorah roar on in the background. Other story details of note are a few of DC’s most popular heroes and villains will be getting a Titan-sized upgrade. The preview showcases that with a giant King Shark battling Godzilla. The preview pages also have the Justice League taking on Kong and Waller grilling out the squad in their usual prison line-up.
DC’s Ready For a Box Office Fight
While DC’s footing in the box office space has been very rocky in the last decade, DC Studios looks to change that this summer with Superman. The James Gunn-directed film is the first in their new shared universe. This is a DCU that will also include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Teen Titans and The Brave and the Bold (Batman) alongside shows like Lanterns and Pacemaker Season 2. The latter anti-hero can be seen in Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong 2’s preview. King Shark was also teased in the Season 1 finale of Creature Commandos where Amanda Waller was once again the one calling the shots. The MonsterVerse, on the other hand, is still flying high off last year’s smash hit Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. That crossover easily became the highest-grossing Godzilla film in franchise history, making over $560 million. The next untitled entry in the franchise was quickly greenlit because of it. It currently has a theatrical date of March 26, 2027, while Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is in production for its highly-anticipated second season. Even though a MonsterVerse/DC crossover seems unlikely on the big screen at the moment, nothing is ever impossible in this current film landscape.
