The following contains major spoilers for Absolute Batman #4, on sale now from DC Comics.
DC has just given readers a glimpse at the very first iteration of its Absolute Batman, and it is absolutely ridiculous.
Absolute Batman #4 brings readers back to the beginnings of Bruce Wayne’s war on crime in Gotham City. While the Batman of the Absolute Universe stands as a hulking force of nature today, it appears that it took quite some time for Bruce to land on a motif that fit him. Rather than trying to present himself as an imposing figure, Bruce’s original Batman was a sleeker, supernaturally inspired breed of vigilante, one wielding high-pitched shrieks, razor sharp claws, and a pair of fangs capable of pumping his victims’ veins full of a powerful paralytic agent.

Absolute Batman is just one of a handful of titles set within the confines of DC Comics’ newest addition to the Multiverse – the Absolute Universe. This reality was first glimpsed after the events of Dark Crisis, but was only recently opened up for actual exploration. The shift came as a result of the apparent demise of Darkseid, which allowed the iconic villain to send his consciousness hurtling across space and time before merging with the reality of the Absolute Universe itself, completely altering the trajectory of what would have otherwise been a naturally unfolding timeline.
Like other DC icons such as Superman and Wonder Woman, the Batman of the Absolute Universe is a grim, overtly brutal version of the character fans know best. While this Bruce Wayne still lost his family at a young age, he is far from the billionaire playboy who readers are used to seeing in the pages of DC Comics. Instead, this Bruce works from the shadows with what little resources he has, not to mention with the help of his closest friends, Oswald Cobblepot, Waylon Jones, Edward Nygma, and Harvey Dent.

While Batman’s classic enemies have been reimagined as his best friends in the Absolute Universe, some of his closest allies have been similarly reimagined as less benevolent figures. These include Alfred Pennyworth, who has historically served as Bruce’s loyal butler, confidant, and adoptive father figure. In the Absolute Universe, Alfred is instead an acclaimed mercenary with ties to all manner of shadowy organizations. When sent to Gotham City, Alfred quickly crossed paths with Batman, who was embroiled in his ongoing war against the violent gang known as the Party Animals. Though Batman and Alfred could have easily torn one another apart, the duo instead formed an unexpected partnership, even if only for long enough to survive the battle at hand.

Batman
Batman is one of the oldest comic superheroes, with nearly a century of comics, TV-shows, films, and video games. The mild-mannered Bruce Wayne becomes Gotham City’s caped crusader, protecting it from villains like The Joker, Killer Croc, The Penguin, and more. Batman is also one of DC comics’ “Big Three” alongside Superman and Wonder Woman, and together the three help keep the earth safe as founding members of the Justice League.
