The Challengers of the Unknown, DC Comics‘ original classic team of adventurers, will return in a new five-issue limited series this December. DC has revealed cover art for the new series showing the team in action.

DC’s Challengers of the Unknown first appeared in February 1957’s Showcase #6 and have been revived in different incarnations throughout DC’s history. The four adventurers explore paranormal occurrences and investigate the strange and unusual, and now they are set to return as part of DC’s All In printing initiative. The new limited series will be written by Christopher Cantwell (Plastic Man No More!) and features art by Sean Izaakse (Green Arrow). Challengers of the Unknown #1 goes on sale Wednesday, Dec. 18.

DC’s solicit teases the adventures the Challengers of the Unknown will face — as well as some familiar DC legends who will join them on their journeys. “Ace Morgan, June Robbins, Prof Haley, Red Ryan, and Rocky Davis, adventurers “living on borrowed time,” run day-to-day operations for the Justice League’s Watchtower base in orbit above Earth, collaborating with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the League to seal the rifts that threaten the galaxy. But a mysterious foe from the Challengers’ past lurks in the shadows, and its connection to the Darkseid wave will put not only the Challengers, but all of the DC Universe on borrowed time.”

Earlier this year, DC’s Absolute Power event saw Amanda Waller trying to take the metahuman abilities from all characters in the DC Universe — including beloved heroes. After the events of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special, the terror of the Darkseid shockwave cascaded across the entire DC Universe, with the publisher teasing that the very fabric of time and space itself has been torn open. Now, the team of super-scientists who make up the Challengers of the Unknown are back.
