The following contains major spoilers for Absolute Wonder Woman #4, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of the DC Universe’s most powerful gods has just been reimagined as their Absolute self.

Absolute Wonder Woman #4 opens to find the titular hero and her human allies desperately searching for the ingredients needed to complete a ritual that will regrow Wonder Woman’s lost arm. After acquiring the necessary ingredients and shedding her own blood, Diana communes with none other than the god of magic herself — Hecate. Unsurprisingly, Diana’s adoptive mother, Circe, had her own experiences in coming face-to-face with such a brilliant force of nature, even if Hecate is the same one who subjected her to life in Hell in the first place.

The first incarnation of Hecate to call the DC Universe her home was introduced in the opening story from 1982’s Superman Family #218, “Supergirl: The Goddess from Hell!” by Paul Kupperberg and Win Mortimer. As the Greek goddess of magic and the occult, Hecate has a prominent place in the wider DC mythos, albeit not necessarily one within her own little corner of it. In spite of her power and place among the gods, Hecate has not been counted among the other Gods of Olympus, but rather has been relegated to a life spent largely in the Underworld instead.

Throughout her various iterations in the pages of DC Comics, Hecate has served as both an ally of and enemy to Wonder Woman. While the previous, New Earth version of the character only held a handful of appearances to her name, she still played an important role as the patron god of Wonder Woman’s longtime foe, Circe. The current, Prime Earth version of Hecate has been a somewhat more public figure, albeit a more overtly villainous one throughout the majority of her comic book appearances.

DC Might’ve Just Killed Its Most Powerful Hero

One of the most underrated, and important, heroes in the entire DC Universe has just been taken down by an enemy the Justice League can’t stop.

DC’s Absolute Wonder Woman is just one of the several flagship titles taking readers on a journey through the latest addition to the DC Multiverse. While the Absolute Universe’s Wonder Woman is busy battling against mythical beasts, the likes of her world’s Batman and Superman are busy fighting their own battles that are quickly proving to be just as epic. For Batman, that means taking on a roving gang of wantonly violent criminals who just so happen to be willing to bankroll the Dark Knight in exchange for a little extra leeway on his part. For Superman, it means taking on the corporations that would otherwise violently oppress the people standing in between them and razing the world to the ground for a profit.
