In addition to being the current president of DC Comics, Jim Lee is also one of the greatest artists to ever work in the comics medium. Sketches and original art by Lee are highly sought after among fans and collectors, but the artist recently gave away some rather unique pieces of art for free in the most unexpected way.
Sharing his work via Instagram, Lee has posted some birthday cards he recently put together for Impact Day, Warner Bros. Discovery’s annual event where employees give back to their local communities.
Lee shares the five birthday cards he created for people in his community with limited friends and family, furnishing each with a one-of-a-kind sketch. These cards had unique sketches of Batman, Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and Supergirl, making this a birthday to remember for each recipient.
Lee Is One of the Most Iconic Superhero Artists of All Time
Getting his start at Marvel in the 1980s, Lee quickly rose to prominence after he became the main artist on Uncanny X-Men. With the launch of the record-breaking X-Men #1 in 1991, Lee became one of the most popular artists working in the comics industry. Lee would take that success and leave Marvel Comics the following year, when he and six other artists broke away to form Image Comics, now one of the most prominent publisher of creator-owned, independent comics. Lee’s WildStorm Studios quickly became one of the hottest comics imprints in the nineties, publishing popular titles like Gen 13 and The Authority.
Receiving a sketch by Lee is a big deal, so the artist devoting his time to creating one-of-a-kind birthday cards for people in his community highlights just how special the occasion is.
Lee sold WildStorm to DC Comics in 1998, and the artist established himself as one of DC’s top creators by teaming up with writer Jeph Loeb to produce the bestselling Batman: Hush story-line, which ran in Batman #608-619 and which continues to impact Gotham to this day. Lee produced several more DC classics in the decades since, establishing his legacy as one of the definitive DC Comics artists. As such, the birthday recipients lucky enough to receive such a gift are getting a unique piece of DC Comics history with their own piece of Lee artwork.
Still Providing Official New Covers and Art to This Day
Receiving a sketch by Lee is a big deal, so the artist devoting his time to creating one-of-a-kind birthday cards for people in his community highlights just how special the occasion is. Lee personalized each sketch of a famed DC character with white-out effects and different colored paper stocks, putting in that little extra care to make each card a memorable birthday gift. It’s heartwarming to see Jim Lee give back to his community by creating birthday cards containing unique sketches of famous DC Comics characters.
