Summary

Tomorrow Woman’s return poses major threat, potentially adding to chaos in post-Absolute Power world.
Warning! Green Arrow #14 spoilers ahead! One of the most tragic members to ever serve on the Justice League is back with power that could take on the world’s greatest superheroes. Amanda Waller’s reign of terror has heroes everywhere scrambling, and bringing back heroes and villains fans haven’t seen in years.
At the center of this crisis is Task Force VII, a collection of Amazos that Waller has improved thanks to Failsafe and the Brainiac Queen. The original Amazo was created by Anthony Ivo, who had a hand in creating another android, Tomorrow Woman. After years away, Ivo’s greatest creation returns, but not in the heroic fashion readers may have been hoping for.
Tomorrow Woman Returns with More Power Than Ever
In Green Arrow #14 by Joshua Williamson, Amancay Nahuelpan, Sean Izaakse, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Troy Peteri, Team Arrow is updated on the current situation by Batman and Nightwing. Heroes all over have had their powers stolen by Waller’s Amazos and have subsequently been arrested. Batman informs the archers that they have likely been spared due to Oliver working with Waller and orders the team to stay put, just in case they’re needed as a last resort. However, Arsenal refuses to stay and the rest of Team Arrow follows.
Team Arrow isn’t prepared for Tomorrow Woman’s powerful telepathic and telekinetic moves.
Thankfully, Arsenal has a plan to track down and retrieve Professor Ivo, believing he may have a secret for taking Task Force VII down. The team heads for Arrow Island’s new and improved Arrow Cave and jets off in their new Arrowplanes to find the mad scientist they need. Cheshire’s old contacts are able to help the team track Ivo to Death Valley and find him in a hidden lair. The team indeed finds Ivo, but they also find Tomorrow Woman, alive and in the process of being repaired.
Ivo flees, infuriating Tomorrow Woman, who says Ivo promised her that he’d fix her and help her be a Justice League member again. Blaming the team for chasing Ivo off, Tomorrow Woman attacks. Team Arrow isn’t prepared for Tomorrow Woman’s powerful telepathic and telekinetic moves. Connor Hawke tries to get his allies to shoot at her eyes, but before they know what’s happened, Tomorrow Woman has the team suspended several hundred feet in the air. Arsenal asks her to let them down, only for Tomorrow Woman to send them all plummeting to the ground.
Tomorrow Woman Was the Justice League’s Biggest Tragedy
Tomorrow Woman’s time with the Justice League was relatively short and for a very good reason. Tomorrow Woman is an advanced android who was created by Anthony Ivo and T.O. Morrow to infiltrate the Justice League when they allowed new heroes to join. Ivo made his creation’s body incredibly lifelike, with synthetic organs and musculature that could fool almost anyone. But it was Morrow who created Tomorrow Woman’s mind, implanted with false memories and a heroic personality just like the Justice League’s members.
Tomorrow Woman wasn’t created to spy on the JLA. Rather, she was designed as a trojan horse who would kill the DC Universe’s greatest heroes with an EMP designed to attack brain activity. Tomorrow Woman was unaware of her true purpose, thinking of herself as just a person with powerful telekinetic abilities who wanted to do good in the world. Tomorrow Woman impressed the Justice League at her audition and was accepted into the team. Eventually, the time comes when her murderous programming activates, but Tomorrow Woman resists it, refusing to kill her Justice League teammates.
Tomorrow Woman’s tragic tale can be read in
JLA #5 (1997)
.
At the same time, the JLA was fighting a weapon from the future known as IF (the Implicate Field). Nothing short of an EMP could destroy it and with Tomorrow Woman’s programming urging her to complete her mission, Tomorrow Woman sacrificed herself, defeating the IF. The Justice League found her remains afterward, discovering her true nature, leading them to track down and arrest both Morrow and Ivo. As for the fallen Justice Leaguer, she was given a hero’s burial, with Superman noting that Tomorrow Woman was more than a machine.
What Tomorrow Woman’s Return Means for the DC Universe
It doesn’t seem like a coincidence that Ivo suddenly is working on Tomorrow Woman just as Amanda Waller is bringing the world under her heel with her new Amazo Squad. Amazos are strong, but Tomorrow Woman is arguably the strongest android Ivo ever created. It’s not outside of the realm of possibility that he gathered what was left of Tomorrow Woman to keep himself safe as Waller starts to establish her new world order. Of course, that assumes that this Tomorrow Woman is the same one who fought with the Justice League.
Tomorrow Woman has powerful psychic abilities that are at least on Martian Manhunter’s level.
Despite the malicious programming lurking within her, the original Tomorrow Woman was a sweet and caring person dedicated to justice. The Tomorrow Woman seen here is much more intense, ready to call herself a villain if she can’t get what she wants. It’s hard to imagine how a valiant hero like Tomorrow Woman goes from hero to villain, but it’s not that big a surprise since Ivo’s had his claws in her. But if Tomorrow Woman has truly gone to the dark side, that could spell danger, especially in a post-Absolute Power world.
Even without the lethal EMP she was programmed with, Tomorrow Woman has powerful psychic abilities that are at least on Martian Manhunter’s level. She’s this close to killing a group of street-level archers simply by using telekinesis to drop them from a high enough point. What happens when she decides to go after other innocent people or her old teammates? Tomorrow Woman may have died a hero, but if this really is her, she’s come back as a Justice League-level nightmare.
The DC Universe’s heroes are already dealing with one of Ivo’s worst creations. But what would make the Amazo army even worse for the heroes who haven’t lost their powers is having to deal with an android with Tomorrow Woman’s power level. There are barely enough forces scrapped together to stop Waller, there’s honestly not much they can do with a rogue Tomorrow Woman also in the mix. Hopefully, Team Arrow will have some way of handling this former Justice League hero before things get too out of control.
