DC Teases a Teen Titans Comeback, Bringing Together Some Epic (and Surprising) Heroes

DC is hinting at an all-new Teen Titans line-up, setting the stage for the fan-favorite team’s epic comeback. While the Titans are as active as ever in the DC Universe, the Teen Titans haven’t had much of a presence in recent memory. That absence could be drawing to a close, though, as their return is being teased via a moment that introduces an exciting roster of heroes old and new.

In Black Lightning #3 by Brandon Thomas, Fico Ossio, Ulises Arreola, and Lucas Gattoni, Lightning – the daughter of Black Lightning – wrestles with the idea of fighting villains as her superhero alter ego and decides to consult others who can relate to her experiences. She sets up a video call with several heroes from across the world, all of whom are teenagers like her.

This selection of young heroes would make a great line-up for the Teen Titans, and DC may be laying the groundwork for that team’s return by pairing these unlikely characters together. After an extended hiatus, the Teen Titans could be coming back to DC’s continuity.

Lightning’s Call Sets Up the Return of DC’s Fan-Favorite Team

The Teen Titans made their original DC debut in 1965’s Teen Titans #1 by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy, and they have since evolved from the Justice League’s sidekicks to an established team of respected warriors. Unfortunately, as popular as the Teen Titans are, they haven’t made much of a splash in DC’s most recent eras. This lack of presence is due in part to the fact that the team has split into two separate factions: the Titans and the Teen Titans. The Titans have risen to extraordinary heights after temporarily taking the Justice League’s place, whereas the Teen Titans are nowhere in sight.

Since the team was founded decades ago, the Teen Titans have been a consistent presence in the DC Universe, headlining multiple ongoing series over the years. The most recent series led by the Teen Titans was Teen Titans Academy by Tim Sheridan and Rafa Sandoval, which spanned from 2021 to 2022. This story expanded the Titans to combine its older and younger iterations, incorporating the past while building towards the future. However, after the Titans took center stage in 2023, the Teen Titans haven’t been graced with a new in-continuity series to coincide with theirs. Now, thanks to Lightning, DC’s next generation could kick off a reunion.

DC’s Next-Generation Heroes Would Make a Solid Teen Titans Roster

The Teen Titans have taken various forms throughout the team’s existence in DC canon. The founding roster consists of Robin, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Speedy, and Aqualad, and that original group of heroes set the precedent that numerous others have followed. Now, Lightning’s video call has alluded to a new group that holds similar potential as a team. Lightning’s powers resemble her father’s due to her ability to harness lightning, as her hero name suggests, and she is far from the only powerhouse in the mix. Some of her friends have already been members of the Teen Titans, whereas others would be first-time recruits.

Kid Flash, Blue Beetle, and Jackson Hyde’s Aquaman are all former Teen Titans who would be making a return to the team’s ranks. Wallace West’s super-speed would come in handy for this group, as would Jaime’s Power Rangers-inspired suit and Jackson’s aquatic powers. In addition to Lightning herself, there are three other inclusions in this roster that haven’t been featured in the Teen Titans before: Cyclone, Signal, and Stargirl. Cyclone can manipulate wind, proving she’s a valuable asset to the team, while Stargirl and Signal’s experience with heroes like the JSA and Batman respectively grant them the skills to thrive in the Teen Titans.

With Every Hero In Action, The Teen Titans Should Get Their Own Fresh Start

For DC’s All In era, the Justice League has invited every hero into its ranks rather than being selective with its members. As a result, every team gets to share their resources while dwelling together in the Watchtower. Thus, there’s never been a better time for the Teen Titans to return. They won’t have to worry about finding their own base of operations as the older branch of their team occupies Titans Tower, and they’ll also have plenty of mentors available to guide them without requiring an Academy. The Teen Titans deserve a comeback, and DC might be planting the seeds for a big one.
