The following contains major spoilers for Absolute Wonder Woman #3, on sale now from DC Comics.
DC’s Absolute Wonder Woman has proven how far she is willing to go to save the people she cares about, and it is more brutal than anyone expected.
With the threat of the towering monster known as the Tetracide looming overhead, Absolute Wonder Woman #3 finds the titular hero looking back on her life and trying to find some solace in her memories. Specifically, in the memory of how far she was willing to go to save Steve Trevor when he was trapped in Hell alongside her. Not only did Diana sacrifice a piece of herself so that Steve could go home, she hacked away until that sacrifice amounted to an entire arm cut from the very last Amazon.

DC’s Absolute Universe is the latest addition to the infinite Multiverse, at least in its current form. Previously, the Absolute Universe had been left behind in the aftermath of the Dark Crisis, which created a new, infantile reality that was completely cut off from the rest of the Multiverse. It wasn’t until Darkseid forced the Justice League to utterly annihilate him that the villain was able to send his consciousness across realities and into the Absolute Universe, merging with it on every conceivable level so that he could alter its natural course of history, effectively remaking it in his own image.
Rather than the bright and shining Amazon warrior fans know best, the Absolute Wonder Woman is a grim, gritty iteration of the character who was quite literally raised in Hell. The last of her kind, Diana’s only hope as a child rested with the witch Circe, who has historically played the role of a villain in Wonder Woman’s story. This time, however, Circe took it upon herself to raise Diana as best as possible, giving the young Amazon every advantage so that she might escape the bowels of their treacherous homeland and become the hero she was always meant to be.

Whereas Circe is a classic villain now playing the role of a hero, the Absolute Steve Trevor is still just as much the lovable ally he was when he first appeared in William Moulton Marston and Harry G. Peter’s closing story from 1942’s All-Star Comics #8. In fact, it was Steve Trevor’s plane crashing down on Paradise Island that ushered in Wonder Woman’s own comic book debut, making him the oldest ally she has ever known outside of her fellow Amazons. Across almost every single iteration of her story, Steve Trevor has been right there at Wonder Woman’s side as both her biggest supporter and her greatest love interest.
